Pantone's pick for color of the year is mimosa, a bright, vibrant yellow. All flavors of yellow are in vogue for 2009's spring and summer fashion season.

The trendy color for spring/summer 2009 is vivid, upbeat yellow, a refreshingly cheery outlook in a bleak and disillusioned world. The year's fashions will favor all shades of yellow, from subtle hues to rich golds and dark amber.

Yellow for Fashions of Spring/Summer 2009

What do sunshine, warmth, orange juice and candy have in common? They are all this year's color. According to trendsetting Pantone Inc. – an authority on color and one of the leading color experts for industry, fashion and interior décor – yellow is the "it" color for spring and summer '09.

Specifically, it is Mimosa, a "warm, engaging yellow" that is being highlighted for 2009. "In a time of economic uncertainty and political change," says Pantone's press release, "optimism is paramount and no other color expresses hope and reassurance more than yellow."

How to Wear Yellow

Yellow is not the easiest color for most people to wear. Here are a few guidelines for picking the right shade for your hair and skin tone:

  • Bright, sunny yellow looks best in contrast with either very dark or very pale skin.
  • Dark, rich shades of amber and bronze suit Asian and Mediterranean women, or those with light blonde hair and tanned skin tones.
  • Pale yellow hues look good on Caucasian women who aren't tanned.

If there isn't a shade of yellow that you love with your hair or complexion, try a textured or patterned top that makes use of another color such as black, dark brown, or white near your face.

Yellow works well when it is offset by a dark or somber color in other elements of an outfit.

Bold Yellow Accents and Accessories Brighten the Fashion Landscape

If you can't find a shade of yellow that suits you or you just don't feel comfortable decked out like a daffodil, don't despair. This year's trend will be for startling yellow accessories like beaded jewelry, purses and shoes that offset more conventionally colored clothing:

  • trendy necklaces made of wooden or glass beads lighten up a casual outfit
  • lemon yellow pumps with a black or navy dress
  • a bright scarf with a dark blouse
  • a sunflower-bedecked hat in hot weather
  • a buttery yellow purse can accompany almost anything
  • throw pillows or an afghan in golden or mustard hues to refresh and brighten up a room

Symbolism of Yellow

It's not a coincidence that mimosa yellow was chosen for this year in particular. Yellow is uplifting, cheerful, and optimistic – it lightens up the atmosphere. Yellow is often used to cheer people up. In color therapy, yellow is associated with personal identity, moral strength and mental acuity.

The pick of mimosa yellow as 2009's characteristic color gives you a perfect excuse to get off that dull, winter palate and let your yellow spirit shine!
