For an easy costume, become Amy Poehler's Baby Mama character or a serpent queen of the Nile. Here's how to quickly put together a unique costume for All Hallows Eve.

Choosing a Halloween costume can be stressful and expensive—unless your draw on items you already have to create great ideas for costumes. Here are some costume ideas using items likely hiding at the back of the closet.

Grow a Baby Bump as Angie Ostrowiski from the Movie Baby Mama

What’s needed:

  • stretchy halter top
  • black pants
  • high heeled shoes
  • small cushion for belly stuffing
  • old nylon pantyhose
  • sparkly head scarf or head band
  • large convenience store pop cup

Putting it together: Dress as if you’re headed out to a body grinding nightclub—the twist is the pregnant belly. To give yourself a baby bump, cut the legs off old nylon pantyhose and wear the stretchy band over the stuffing around your waist. Now, head out to a bumpin’ Halloween party with all the energy of Amy Poehler's hilarious character from Baby Mama.

The Pie-Making Mrs. Lovett from Sweeney Todd

What’s needed:

  • full length black skirt and black blouse or tank top
  • black scarf or length of material
  • black shawl
  • rolling pin
  • white face make up
  • fake blood

Putting it together: Dress in the black skirt and shirt, then cover your shoulders with the shawl. Wrap the scarf around the waist as a makeshift corset. For hair, tease sections and pile in a messy up-do. Give yourself a deathly pallor with makeup then apply fake blood to the end of the rolling pin. Now you're all set to make (gulp) human pie.

Dress Up as Prim and Proper Nancy Drew

What’s needed:

  • plaid skirt
  • plain sweater in a color that co-ordinates perfectly with the skirt
  • magnifying glass
  • headband
  • locket necklace
  • ballet flats

Putting it together: Nancy Drew is all about the tiniest details, so the more matchy-matchy the outfit the better. Pull hair back from your face with the headband or tie back your locks in a half-back hairdo. Grab the magnifying glass and start looking for clues.

Rule the Nile in an Egyptian Queen Halloween Costume

What’s needed:

  • vibrant mini dress in purple, blue, or gold, etc.
  • heeled sandals
  • 8 m (26 ft.) of ribbon or 28 m (92 ft.) of yarn to match sandals
  • 1 m (3 ft.) of sheer cloth for cape
  • metallic head band
  • black eyeliner
  • optional: rubber snake

Putting it together: Cut the ribbon in half then wrap one section under the heel of your shoe then crossing back and forth around your lower leg to create a faux leg-wrapped sandal. If using yarn, cut 8 strands of 3.5 m (11.5 ft.) and gather in two strands. As with the ribbon, wind up each leg and secure just below the knee. Wear the headband horizontally so it crosses your forehead then apply strong eye liner in an Egyptian style. Lastly, twine the snake around your neck or arm. Now, begin dreaming of the Nile.

Rival Helen of Troy as a Greek Goddess

What’s needed:

  • white bed sheet
  • safety pins
  • 4 m (13 ft.) of ribbon
  • plastic leaves and gold spray paint (or a headband and alumunim foil) to make a laurel leaf crown

Putting it together: Using a twin sheet horizontally or folding a double sheet in half, wrap around the body and then over one shoulder. Secure the sheet with safety pins. Wrap the gold ribbon a few times around your waist, creating a cross hatch pattern. To easily create a laurel leaf crown, paint plastic leaves gold then weave into a circle. A more time-consuming method is to glue aluminum foil to two sides of a piece of cardboard, cut out leaf shapes then attach to a headband. In your elegant toga, you are ready to trick or treat Athenian style!
