There are lots of cute women's hats to cover hair loss. Female pattern baldness is one main cause of hair thinning.

While losing hair is no fun, whether due to chemo, female pattern baldness, or some other cause, there are lots of cute hats to cover up hair loss. After seeking a doctor for advice, women can find great online resources for fabulous women's hats.

When a woman notices hair loss, the first thing she should do is consult her physician to see if there is an underlying cause. This is really important and can not be stressed enough. Depending on what her doctor says, her next step may be to buy a wig or to check out some really fabulous hats.

Common Causes of Hair Loss

  • DHT, a derivative of testosterone, found in women's bodies and tied to menopause or hormonal fluctuations
  • Stressful events or trauma, such as malnutrition or surgery
  • Chemotherapy
  • Traction Alopecia - extensions, weaves, tight ponytails

For more information about women's hair loss read Causes of Hair Loss at americanhairloss.org. It is surprising how common thinning hair is.

Ladies Hats

There are many treatments for thinning hair. Some of them work, some of them don't, and some of them are ridiculously expensive. Well, if the treatment works, it would be worth the cash, so maybe the shampoos and hair transplants are worth a try. However, some women don't have enough hair to transplant. Every head is different.

Chemo Hats at Headcovers.com

A woman doesn't need to have cancer to love these women's hats, and the price is always right at this online store. One of the great things about chemo hats is that they are lightweight and a woman won't overheat when wearing one in a restaurant or a friend's home.

Preppy Tailored Styles:

  • Cotton Roller Hat (get a color to flatter one's face, not one's outfit)
  • Toyo Braid Hat
  • Hand Crocheted Kathleen Hat
  • Cotton Basic Beret
  • Linen Poppy Hat

Funky Boho Chic:

Most of the preppy styles can be funkified with flower pins and other embellishments.

  • Denim Bucket Hat
  • Isabelle Bow Hat (this baby travels like a dream)
  • Velvet Brenda Hat

Maggie Mae Hats

These are custom hats, handmade by Sally, and surprisingly affordable. Sally will explain the measurements for her hats and she’ll ship the finished product in a reasonable time. (Maggie Mae is a cat.) Sally is easy to work with, so send her an email about prices. (Pay attention to instructions because there are no returns.) The Barbara style is a personal favorite.

Sites for Hats

Medium priced hats can be hit or miss, so always make sure to read the return policy for hats. Most sites allow returns if certain procedures are followed, but double check in case policies change.

Thinning hair is usually more obvious when a gal is outside in sunlight. The scalp really shows through, so buy something casual for running to the market.

VillageHatShop.com:

  • Betmar Velvet Roll-Up Brim
  • Betmar or Jeanne Simmons beret
  • Parkhurst Savanna

BonnetStore.com:

  • Giovannio Rain Hats
  • Kathy Jeanne Hats – Women should not freak when they see the wilder styles, just click on bottom right to find cute everyday chapeaus on the third page of the Kathy Jeanne section.

Louise Green Hats

This is the high-end good stuff. While not cheap, these ladies' hats are beautifully crafted. This is the most reliably good hat shop on the web. (The LG website has changed and the page numbers below refer to catalogs. Request any catalog online. This article will be updated soon to reflect the change in website format.)

Women who can’t find the right color combination should email Alison (at Louise Green) to get ideas.

Cute Casual Hats Spring 09:

  • Small patchwork flower berets. These are spread out on many pages.
  • Parasisal straw fedoras and “Emily” cloches (pages 42-43). These hats are appropriate to wear indoors to a restaurant or a mall for a large part of the year in temperate regions.

Spring 08:

  • Fedoras and berets (page 9 or 22).
  • Hats like those shown on pages 30-31 could go anywhere.

While all of the hats are cute, for maximum usage, look for a small brim. Larger brims look strange after dark. (Women with wealthy husbands should ignore this advice and buy everything.)

Warmer Casual Hats Fall 08:

  • Menswear plaid and embellished berets (pages 26-29)
  • Minnie or Emily styles with simple embellishments go anywhere

There are more hats in other seasons, so look around. Women should examine the colors in their closets, however many colors, other than black, are good for complexions and make a gal look healthy. Who says the color must match the clothing? Some women will want a cotton pad to protect their scalps, so check chemo hat sites.

There are lots of good hat shops, but these are some of women’s favorites, and this includes women of all ages.
