From plaids to florals and mismatched colors to geometric patterns, this season's look is complex and clashing.

Clashing colors, mismatched patterns and punchy plaid prints are designed to break all the fashion rules this fall. This season favors esoteric designs, which really get you noticed.

The fall winter look is not for the faint hearted, wear patterned tights with bold-colored plaids and team floral prints with tough biker jackets or military coats. Mismatch tartan tops with wide-legged plaid pants and float across the room in floor-sweeping plaid maxis.

Forget the dainty ands ditsy prints of the spring summer season, fall florals are flirty and forthright; vibrant and abstract, in purples, pinks, greens, blacks and whites. Leafy patterns in fabulous silks and satins are volumed-up in skirts and cocoon-shaped dresses. There is also a new twist on sleeves, kimono style, batwing and caped. Wear a winter turtleneck under a floral print dress or soften-up a structured jacket or with a pretty flowery skirt.

Net-a-porter.com , in its online magazine feature, "Fall Florals", recommends 5 of the best flower print dresses of the season, ranging from Vivienne Westwood’s Nymphs satin shirt dress, to Anna Sui's hippie-style deluxe maxi and Tracey Reese’s floral print Trapunti waist dress – the perfect wedding guest outfit.

Designer Floral Prints

When it comes to high-end designer, Oscar De La Renta’s ready-to-wear collection features some fabulously fall-like floral print skirts in purple hues and russet browns and subtle grays. Swing skirts with plenty of volume sit under sculpted jackets and chunky knits.

Michael Kors, Dries Van Norton, Christian Dior and Roberto Cavailli all over florals to-die-for this fall, in the shape of dresses at demure knee-length, to fun and flirty minis. Wear them with opaques or clashing patterned hosiery.

Plaid Trend for Fall 2008

On-trend girls wear plaid this season, in all shapes and sizes. From plaid maxi and mini dresses and blouses to skirts, and outerwear which includes cropped-style and traditional hunting jackets. Choose from the subtle to the bold and brazen, with bold blues, purples and soft muted grays and blacks. Plaid packs a punch on designer runways as they are teamed with soft chiffon and satins.

Dolce & Gabbana Plaids for Fall 2008

Dolce and Gabbana offer up some show-stopping plaid prints in pussy-bow blouses, long jackets and matching skirts. According to style.com, Dolce & Gabbana have really worked this theme, the beloved cloth of HRH Queen Elizabeth. This is aristocracy meets the country girl trend, with patterned skirts in mismatched tartans, twinsets and jackets and silk scarves. Tartan trousers clash with plaid blouses for an esoteric feel. The label has even re-worked the maxi dresses to include voluminous plaid prints.

Ralph Lauren Plaids for Fall 2008

Ralph Lauren is another designer who favors plaid, with huge sculpted collared-cropped jackets, long coats and tartan blouses, in reds, greens and blacks. Lauren has worked some complex but covetable combinations such as a plaid hunting jacket worn over a mini dress in a buffalo check, or a cashmere plaid shirt. There is even a one-shouldered plaid maxi dress, which ticks so many trend boxes in one lump.
