Finding stylish children’s clothing has never been easier. Gone are the days of embarrassing ruffles and uncomfortable fabrics. An increasing number of designers are making clothes for kids, and the best news is, they are as cute and fashionable as the adult versions (and at a lower price)!
Splendid: The adult line famous for their soft, striped t-shirts now has lines for children and babies (so cute!) Casual wear includes tees, sweatshirts, skirts and dresses (girls), onesies (babies).
Little Marc: Marc Jacobs has a boys and girls line (larger sizes than some children’s brands; Little Marc is meant to go through “tween” years) and a toddlers line. Trend-conscious, looks include Bermuda shorts, casual tops, capris and lots of denim.
Juicy Couture: The kids selections range from exact mimics to variations of the adult versions, sometimes in different patterns or colors The one-color velour tracksuit has evolved into a “too-cool” cliché, but the line has additional less-talked-about pieces including tops, dresses and accessories.
J. Crew – Crew Cuts: Available through J. Crew’s website and a few select stores Styles are very similar to the adult clothing; summer’s choices include nautical-inspired pieces, gauzy dresses and colorful flats. There are often “ads” in the catalog, but be sure to check the website to see the merchandise.
Da-Nang: Clothes for “tweens” and children include the brand’s trademark pants, skirts and jackets. The best thing about Da-Nang is the soft fabrics. It’s a great brand for kids because the clothes already have a slightly wrinkled look (purposely), and wearing them in only makes them look hipper, not worn. They stand the test of time and are good for all seasons (well, uncertain about snow!)
A quick search on the Internet reveals numerous websites that sell the above brands, but these and others can be found at stores such as:
Bloomingdale’s (kids department)
Nordstrom’s (kids department)
Fred Segal (Los Angeles)
M. Frederic Kids
An additional source for excellent children’s shoes is Zappos.com. They have a long list of brands in both everyday kids brands and designer brands. They consistently have the largest selection of shoes to choose from and it’s easy to search according to size, color and type. Since they don’t charge for shipping or returns, it’s even easier than shopping at a store.
And don’t forget: if you’re petite, children’s stores can be for adults, too – especially items with relaxed fits such as jackets. Or, raid the accessories – sophisticated or funky jewelry, purses or hair accessories transcend age.
