What to Wear to a Friend's House

When Catching up With the Girls is Causing Wardrobe Issues

Going to a friend's house, whether for dinner, catching up for a coffee, their child's birthday party, or just to laze around on a Sunday afternoon, the dilemma of "what

First you need to look at the occasion, if there is one. Having a get-together with friends at someone’s house doesn’t call for such a formal look as going, say, out to a restaurant for dinner. Unless there is a specific dress code, here are some ideas on appropriate outfits.

The Jeans and Tee

Team your dark-wash lower-waisted jeans with a vintage-style tee and ballet flats. The look is understated and simple, yet shows that you take care in your appearance and appreciate the host. It is also great if you duck out to the movies together, run down to the DVD hire store or end up at a café for coffee. Another way with your jeans is a fitted empire line top, a wide v-neck top with a ruched middle or a simple cotton button-front shirt worn with wedges.

Cardigans

A light knit jumper or a chunky cardigan with a self belt are both great options for cooler weather. A coloured sweater with a deep v worn with a contrasting top underneath is a fun and casual look, great for chilling with a DVD together, a kids birthday party or watching the world go by on the front verandah. Team this look with wide leg khaki pants or a simple skirt.

In summer, a cotton sundress in a cute colour with flip-flops is perfect for a barbeque dinner, a light lunch or a few drinks on a warm afternoon.

Getting together with girlfriends and taking the kids to the park is a great way to kill an afternoon. Again, jeans and simple tees are perfect for kicking the soccer ball, heading down the slide, sitting on the grass for a catch up gossip, then heading out together for milkshakes.

Slightly More Dressy

A slightly more dressed-up option is a tee with wide leg pants and a denim vest (just do not commit the sin of wearing double denim!).

It never hurts to make a little effort, even if you have been friends for longer that you can remember. Lip gloss, mascara and a quick brush through your hair shows your best girlfriend that you still care, both about her and yourself. Stack on the chunky bangles and funky necklaces, and don’t be afraid of colour!

Footwear

Ugg boots or slippers are never appropriate, except when staying the night. If it is cold and you do want something on your feet, wear flats with socks, then slip your shoes off inside.

When you head out to a friends house, or even if they come over to your place, remember that you are friends, and that they want to see you, not your outfit. Keep it simple, easy and laid back, and let the conversation take it’s own course. After all, that is what catching up with your girlfriends is all about.
