From wide-legged trousers to cropped pegged pants, skinny-legged or flares; there are styles aplenty this fall to suit even the most discerning of fashionistas.

With super-baggy pegs or high-waisted turn-ups, or purple satin flares, designs range from the dramatic and mannish to luxe, sexy and slouchy, taking on a new lease of life. According to the Times newspaper, in their August 13th 2008 article “Fashion Trends for Autumn & Winter,” trousers “haven’t been this fashionable for years.”

For women who like to wear the trousers, Fall 2008 collections provide the biggest contradiction in trends that runways have seen in a long time. However, whether it be wide-legged flared jeans,skin-tight treggings, super-baggy turn-ups or cropped pegs, pants will always make a woman look strong. One of the most popular looks is the new 7/8th-length, designed to show-off the ankle.

Trousers for Fall 2008

To be right-on-trend, this season’s must buy is a pair of voluminous pegs, tapered to just above the ankle. These tailored trousers challenge all the conventional principles of tailoring, according to Stefano Pilanti of Yves Saint Laurent, in Marie Claire’s “Fast FWD to Fall,” August 2008 U.S. issue. You'll also find architectually sculpted super-wide crops from YSL, Louis Vuitton, Marc Jacobs and 3.1 Phillip Lim.

Another must-buy is a pair of satin or silk pants, for a luxe cocktail feel. Trousers like Burberry Prorsum’s purple satin flares, look great under a long tunic top, as well as being the It-color fo the season. There’s also the more funky “biker” trouser with padding at the knee, or plaid cigarette pants, with plaids and checks beings another strong look of the season.

How to Wear Trousers for Fall

Sadly not all this season’s styles are flattering to figures. Those who are young, willowy and slim can carry off almost any style, but those women who are mature in years or broader around the waist and hips, finding a slimming cut tha suits you is all important.

  • If you are pear-shaped then avoid tapered pegs and go for wide leg-styles with a gentle flare, which go all the way down to floor. This will balance out your body shape.
  • This season’s plaid cigarette pants look good with matching or competing waistcoats or pussy bow blouses. Wear tweeds and plaid pants with soft floral prints for a more feminine look.
  • Biker trousers need to be worn with strappy heels for a sexy look, or for a more authentic one, this season’s killer biker boots.
  • Twenty-somethings can go for a goth look, with skinny leather drainpipes and too-big tailored jackets, with sleeves rolled up. Don’t forget lashings of chunky jewelry around the neckline, layer upon layer of chains or loads of costume jewelry.
  • The higher the waist of the trouser, the shorter and more close fitting a jacket needs to be.
  • Go for fashion staple neutrals black and gray or this fall's darker berry-like colors if you want to create a slimming effect.
  • When it comes to footwear, this season’s structured super-baggy pegs look great with high heels or ankle boots. Seven-eighths-length pants complement this season’s popular shoe-boot styles and ankle boots.
