This Fashion Week saw packed tents in downtown Toronto, and a handful of fashion shows propelled Canadian fashion designers further as international style contenders.
Every season at Toronto Fashion Week the same questions emerge: who will stand out? Who will show up? Who will be on trend? Who will be off the pace? Who will you remember after the fashion shows wrap and the runway models leave town? This season a few of the international fashion trends were found on the Toronto runways, a few designers cemented their status as leaders of the pack, models were diverse, and crowds were buzzing. Read on for highlights from Toronto Fashion Week. Pink TartanIt’s a shame to pick favourites, but nevertheless Pink Tartan reigns supreme this season yet again. Minus the slightly out-of-place cowboy hats worn by a handful of models, Kimberley Newport-Mimran designed a complete and powerful collection. The collection was on trend, by adding pretty ruffles, sporty stripes, and eye-catching metallics, but never looked like it was just trying to keep up with the international runways. One of the best looks of the show was a full, black jumper worn with a black, sequined waistcoat. Newport-Mimran’s dedication to designing completely wearable clothing will keep her at the top of the pile for season’s to come. Joe Fresh StyleComplementing Pink Tartan’s commitment to wearability, and adding affordability to boot, is the other half of the Mimran designing duo, Joe Mimran, and his brand Joe Fresh Style. The show started with a bang, as Keith Richards’ daughter, Theodora Richards, opened the collection by dancing down the runway in white underpants and long sleeved tee. Joe Fresh was on trend with his use of bright white fabrics and sheer clothing, and Mimran took this season’s lingerie trend and ran with it, sending models out in tighty-whities, and layering bras right over top of dress shirts and button-up frocks. RudsakIn terms of outwear, no one does it better than Montreal’s Rudsak. It would be silly to say that Rudsak was on point with this season’s leather trend, since the brand defines the trend season after season. This season Rudsak paired it’s luxurious leather jackets over top of flirty and white summer dresses. Absolutely covetable leather coats and handbags were done in a range of colours, from bright orange, to mushroom, to camel. If you are looking to adopt this season’s leather trend, look no further than Rudsak. Spring 2010 was one of their best collections to date. Other mentionable shows this season were Andy The-Anh’s collection featuring ladylike detailing, including draping, a ruffle-collar jacket, and bright white evening wear. NADA showed off her love affair with lace this season, and featured a wide variety including French lace, painted lace, and embellished lace to suit all tastes. And David Dixon presented a collection of young and hip cocktail dresses for the stylish elite of Hollywood North. Season after season Canadian designers work towards establishing Toronto Fashion Week as an emerging fashion capital, and the Spring 2010 shows brought the city one step closer. During a global recession industries of all types find themselves in a sink-or-swim state, and the fashion industry is no different. After the Toronto collections wrapped, it became clear that a talented group of designers is rising to the top.
