Fashion trends for fall? Incorporate teal, papaya, and amethyst into your wardrobe. Invest in a bright coat, cardigan, day dress, white shirt, and a leather jacket.

Today marks the official start of autumn – is your wardrobe ready? According to fashion mags and insiders, there are three colours and five key pieces that are sure to make your wardrobe fashion forward this fall.

The Colours of Fall

According to Instyle.com, the three hottest hues for fall are teal, papaya, and amethyst. Whether you choose to work one of these colours into your wardrobe via a new coat or a stylish necklace, these shades work with a variety of skin tones and colours.

5 Key Pieces for Fall

There are 5 articles of clothing that your wardrobe must have in order to be considered fashion forward for fall.

  • Bright Coat: A great way to work in a touch of teal, papaya or amethyst to your wardrobe; the bright coat brings a punch of colour and fun to a season whose looks known are better known for dark reds, browns, and blacks. Instyle.com recommends pairing your coat with lower key shades such as white, beige, or black. This will prevent your look from seeming “busy” and allows your bright coat to shine.
  • Cardigan: The cardigan will never go out of style, and there’s a reason why. Cardigans are simultaneously cozy, stylish, and luxurious – particularly if they’re made of cashmere. Look for a long, slimming fitting cardigan (sort of like what your grandmother used to wear) to get ready for fall. Whether you choose to wear your cardigan buttoned or unbuttoned, instyle.com warns against pairing too many layers with it – you don’t want to look bunchy and awkward. The look you’re going for is casual and effortless.
  • Day Dress: Worried that dresses are only for summer? Think again. The day dress, with its simple and clean lines, is flattering and easy to wear. You can be ready for a meeting at the office or a nice brunch with friends in a flash. Although many day dresses are sleeveless, look for a cap-sleeved or long-sleeved dress for a cut that is universally flattering and age-appropriate. Instyle.com recommends adding some jewelry, dark hose, and a little make up to round out your look.
  • White Shirt: The white shirt is romantic, stylish, and elegant – just the words you want to invoke when describing your fall wardrobe. Don’t be intimidated by the detailing found on many of these Edwardian-inspired tops; paired with a simple black pant or jean, they will add flair to your outfit without looking overdone. Instyle.com advises allowing the shirt to stand on its own – this means no jacket or fancy pants that will distract from the blouse. Look for clean lines in your other articles of clothing and feel free to experiment with more dramatic makeup.
  • Leather Jacket: On the runway, the leather jackets were simple and ornate, loose and form-fitting, light and dark washed. What does this mean for you? There is no “right” leather jacket and you should look for one that makes you feel great. Instyle.com notes that designers have styled their leather jackets with everything from leggings to a dress; however, a white tank top or plain t-shirt is always a safe bet. Like the cardigan, there is lots of room for personal interpretation with this trend.
