The 1980s – a decade noted for excess and marred by over-the-top fashion. Who could forget those shimmering Dynasty evening gowns or those power suits with shoulder pads that made women look like football players? There were so many awful fashion trends: the Michael Jackson “Thriller” jacket, parachute pants, and jelly shoes. It is too easy to make a list of bad 1980s fashion trends, but there were there some fashion trends that were truly timeless and actually pretty cool.
After notorious purveyor of punk, British designer Vivienne Westwood, unleashed her memorable pirate collection in 1981, it had a noticeable influence in the fashion and music industry. (Anyone remember those early 1980s Adam Ant videos?) The new romantic look, complete with flowing outfits, was born on the streets of London. Shirts with girly ruffles are still evident in today’s boho chic styles. If you are tired of wearing the same boring white shirt to work, try a shirt with a feminine ruffled neckline.
So, you have tickets to the Duran Duran or Police reunion tour and you are looking for a way to punch up that boring black dress? Slip into a pair of tights from Look From London. These tights are high quality and colorful. They range from the demure, herringbone and plaid prints; to the wild, leopard and floral prints.
The uber cool 1980s hipster knew Doc Martens were hot. However, in the 1980s, you only had your choice of the classic 8-eyelet boot or the 3-eyelet shoe. Doc Marten has since expanded its collection to include all types of styles including heels, motorcycle boots, mary janes, and comfy clogs. In addition to providing versatile styles, Doc Martens are also extremely durable. They typically last for many years.
Were you a Madonna wannabe? Maybe you would look pretty silly these days with lace gloves, a bra top, and a rosary around your neck. But, in Madonna’s “Respect Yourself” video, she sported an awesome monocle necklace. Reproductions of ornate magnifying glass necklaces can be found at antique shows and flea markets as well as online.
Pretty in Pink was a movie that launched a thousand trends. Teen star Molly Ringwald sported a beautiful dangly pair of cloisonné earrings in that teen flick. Check out eBay for auctions with new and vintage cloisonné jewelry that start at about $2.99.
