This fall's modern makeover of the military trend is influenced by Russian Tsars, hussars and Mounties; with uniformed coats, gold-piped dresses, and brass-buttoned pants

In amongst the many women's fashion trends which are hitting the runways this fall, there is a strong military feel about coats and jackets, with their gold braiding, double-breasted brass buttons and shoulder epaulettes. Fitted jackets and bodices with neat stand-up collars give a romantic and feminine feel to the trend.

In fact, fall fashion in general is having a military moment, as the runways of Alexander McQueen, Jaeger, Aquascutum, Burberry and Moschino attest. Colors vary from black and khaki to royal blues and reds. Piping (or frogging) and brass can be found on everything from coats to dresses to pants. The Military look is accessorized with thigh high and knee high boots, and military-style caps and Russian Cossak hats.

Temperley London Fall 2008

One of the major military looks is from Temperley London, whose label has moved on from sweet and pretty to strong and sexy. Alice Temperley’s collection has been influenced by Mata Hari, full of braided soldier jackets, military caps and braided dresses with thigh-high boots. Temperley's stunning but black Viscount dress with military frogging is now available at Net-a-Porter for £590.

Alexander McQueen Fall 2008

Alexander McQueen’s collection according to Style.com gives a feeling of British Colonial romance; inspired by the Duke of Wellington and Queen Victoria. In amongst the black sculpted dresses adorned with lace and ballerina skirts, are some tough looking military accents in the shape of dresses with military frogging, brocade, brass buttons and epaulettes.

Aquascutum and Jaeger

Classic British fashion houses, Aquascutum and Jaeger London, have made some military maneuver giving their outwear a new lease of life. Aquascutum’s long khaki officer’s greatcoat throws its military might onto the runway, and Jaeger, once known for its traditional outfits for middle-income 40-somethings, showcases a double-breasted caped-sleeves jacket and military-style maxi skirt suits. Even their flared tailored pants get a military makeover, with double fronted brass buttons.

Military-Style Coats

The majority of key looks this season is in outerwear, with military accents being the biggest trend. Make military-looking jackets, and tops less austere by teaming them with swishy volumnous skirts, to soften the look.

Military-style coats comes into their own this season, with high-stand collars and strong uniform styles. Choose from Temperley’s sexy Russian Doll, braided tunic style coats, Moschino’s more traditional double-breasted jacket or McQueen's officer style with brass-buttoned sleeves.

Other Russian Influences for Fall 2008

In addition to the Russian Tsars, Russian peasant-style dresses, tops and skirts also find themselves on the fall runways. These folky boho-inspired prints feature on the runways of Dolce and Gabbana, Gucci, Roberto Cavalli, with dirndl-eque skirts that sit just above and below the knee.
