Whilst most women are familiar with the merits of a "capsule wardrobe," for the winter months it is a good idea to have a capsule coat wardrobe too!

There is no such thing as one perfect coat. No single coat can work triple or quadruple duty when it comes to taking a woman from day to evening, weekend casual and protecting from the rain. Start to build a coat wardrobe buy investing in a good quality everyday classic coat, which can always be jazzed up with on-trend accessories. Then, aim to build a capsule coat wardrobe, as finances and lifestyle allows.

Everyday Classic Coat

The simpler the coat, the more versatile it will be. A straight or semi-fitted single-breasted style is a fail-safe bet. A quality fabric like cashmere will transcend seasons, but make it a neutral, enduring color for maximum timelessness. Winter white is a classy and chic alternative, athough not the most practical! A camel-colored coat has an understated style and looks softer than black. Keep away from trends-of-the-moment such as extra-wide collars, bright colors, overtly–structured styles and military detailing, as this will limit the life of the coat.

When it comes to fabrics then good quality wool or cashmere are hardwearing and timeless. According to stylist Paula Reed in her book Style Clinic (Harper Colling 2009), “leather is also worth considering” as it also transcends seasons. A classic coat should be well lined and properly finished. It should also be a perfect fit.

High Fashion Coat

A high fashion coat designed to be an entrance-maker should be less of an investment than a classic coat, particularly if it is likely to be worn for only a season. Fashionable cuts in jewel tones or neon brights provide a welcome change to the everyday coat’s classic cut and neutral tones. An up-to-the-minute style should reflect a woman's fashion personality, and is a chance to be quirky.

Eye-catching colors add some drama and will change the look of a winter outfit in an instant. Structured shapes with frill and bow detailing are this Fall winter 2009’s wardrobe staples, along with the hottest coat shape, the reinvented cape. Oversized sharp shoulders are particularly flattering as they emphasize the waist. This is one time when it’s good to play with fabric, texture and pattern to add a little attitude — an on-trend shaggy fur (aka the Chubby), animal print or houndstooth check will stand out in the crowd.

Coat for Eveningwear

An elegant evening coat should make an impact but in a simple way. Rich velvet, satin or brocade can make a woman feel like a million dollars. Jewel detailing on lapels or a fur collar will add drama. Longer-length coats are best left for evening, but keep styling simple such as an elegant wrap-style. An off-white coat is a great evening alternative and will also turn heads.

Workwear Coat

The perfect coat for work means balancing style with comfort and durability. Simple shapes work best, such as a semi-fitted style which skims the figure. A classic trench works perfectly over a tailored dress or suit. If traveling on business then a lightweight fabric such as cashmere or double-faced wool (2 layers of wool woven together) enable the coats to be folded and stored easily without creasing.

Sporty Coat

Casual sporty, throw-over coats should express a woman’s personality. A quilted parka or duffle coat has a cheeky, youthful attitude whereas a three-quarter swing coat, pea coat or leather coat has an air of sporty sophistication.

The faithful parka is a wardrobe workhorse but that does not mean it is necessary to scrimp on style. A thigh-length padded parka which is nipped-in at the waist will flatter the figure and make sure the bottom is protected from the elements.

Raincoat - the Trench

Enter the classic trench coat, the stylish way to protect from wind and rain, and one that never ever goes out of style. Long, short, single-breasted or double, the trench look just as good day or night. Tall and slim women look fantastic in a double-breasted trench but other body shapes should go for a single-breasted. Petite women should keep detailing simple, and length short. The belt should be buckled loosely or simply tied. Choose a style with a fantail pleat at the back for ease of movement.

Whether, it's classic camel cashmere, a padded parka, a high-fashion coat with attitude or a sexy trench, a winter coat should suit a woman's shape and proportions. Think cut, color, shape and length. On chilly days, a woman's coat is the first and last thing other people see, so it pays to make a good impression.
