When it comes to swimwear there are 2 trademark looks which will instantly update your wardrobe for Spring 2009 - the one-shouldered swimsuit and the cut-out bikini.

This season’s swimwear is made for posing; not so much for swimming but being the belle of the pool. This includes sexy bandage-style swimsuits and one-shouldered pieces, and exteme cut-away bikinis/monokinis that leave little to the imagination.

One-Shouldered Swimwear

The must have piece for spring summer 2009 is a stylish one-shoulder number. Taking the lead from the current trend in one-shoulder toga-style dresses and asymmetrical necklines, this year’s single-shoulder swimsuits are subtly sexy and sophisticated. The diagonal line narrows across the upper body and the look is seductive without being slutty. Plus it gives you an extra expanse of bare shoulder to tan!

One-shouldered monokinis tick two trend boxes in one, with both cut-outs and one-shoulder dressing. Marios Schwab embraced both features in a risqué piece of swimwear with summer florals and Hervé Léger by Max Aria’s spring summer collection of bandage-style single-shouldered swimsuits and bikinis provide some daring designs in the extreme.

Some monokini’s are not truly single-shouldered but their asymmetric-necklines give that effect. Iconic swimsuit label Gottex has some stunning designs which give the appearance of single-shoulders, but provide better support.

Cut-Away Swimwear

Picking up strongly on this season’s bandage dressing, dare-to-bare swimsuits from Hervé Léger are a typical example of spring’s extreme cut-out, knock-em-dead pieces that appeared on the runways of Spring 2009 New York Fashion Week. For something a little more demure there are cut-aways from Amanda Wakely, Carmen Marc and Miss Sixty. Gottex’s luxe-looking black halter-neck monokini with gold piping is chic and classy. Dsquared2 offers 3 different interpretations of the cut-away swimsuit trend, whilst Miss Bikini Luxe offers-up, according to Fashionishing.com, swimwear of “Cavalli-esque proportions.”

Spring 2009 Swimwear Collections

Spring swimwear collections are currently drifting into stores. Some of the best pieces which tick more than one trend box are available at online designer store Net-a-Porter. A cut-away metallic bandeau swimsuit by Melissa Odabash is likely to transcend seasons and Shay Todd offers up a cut-away hankerchief-style swimsuit with large ruffle. Metallics, ruffles and fringing are key looks for Spring 2009. Melissa Odabash’s black fringed cut-away swimsuit is flattering and subtly sexy, whilst La Perla has a stunningly chic gray bejeweled halter-neck, with gray being one of the new neutrals for spring.

Gottex swimwear leads the way when it comes to originality. A black two-piece joined by a naval anchor in gold, gives the wow factor, but with enough coverage to make this swimsuit a real winner for different body shapes.

Cocktail Bathing

For cocktail bathing at its best then the requirement is some sexy high heels and a glamorous floor-length bejeweled caftan. Matching your bag to your swimsuit is also super-chic. For some serious pool posing Net-a-Porter’s Runway Reporter 2009 magazine recommends throwing a black leather jacket over a printed one-piece. Don't forget to accessorize with some serious statement jewelry; an oversized necklace , large drop earrings or gigantic cuff.

How to Wear Swimsuits for Spring 2009

One word of warning. This season’s hottest trends in swimwear does not suit all body shapes. Cut-away monokinis and bikini’s tend to flatter a petite frame or those with smaller breasts; although some monokini-styles look great on an hour-glass figure. It’s all a question of coverage. If one style does not work for you, don’t despair. Whilst extreme bandage style cut-away bikinis are probably better left for those who are (or feel) the right side of 26, with so many variations on the theme, persistence and patience pays off when trying on swimwear. If big-busted then look for one that offers more coverage on the top, if wanting to hide a bit of a stomach then a monokini with a larger center piece will disguise more flaws!
