It really shouldn't surprise anyone, actually. Skinny jeans and leggings have been key pieces for quite a few seasons now. Colors and textures have shifted (think dark and clean to ripped and destroyed) from season to season, but that tight, lean look has remained constant.
Denim Leggings Origins
It all started in Japan last year and then migrated to the U.K. this spring. Now they can pretty much be found anywhere from Opening Ceremony's high-end version ($300) to American Apparel's high-waisted pair ($40). They've also been spotted on celebrities style mavens like Kate Bosworth, Rihanna and Beyonce.
The trend has its haters. And to be honest, they have a point. The '80s coming back can be a threatening, scary prospect. But, for better or worse, the '80s aren't coming back...they've been back. Never fear, though. Translation of '80s fashion does not have to be literal. Pieces, like denim leggings, can be updated and transformed for the new millennium.
How to Wear Denim Leggings
Dark, clean denim leggings can look sophisticated (yes, sophisticated) with a Geren Ford silk tunic and stacked heels. Wear with one of the season's oversize plaid button-up tops and wedge sandals for youthful, casual look. Or, channel a punk rock vibe by pairing with a long graphic t-shirt.
First, stick with a solid, dark color for a more grown-up look; leave the shredded styles to LiLo. Steer clear of leggings that have a jean print on them -- complete with five-pocket detailing, distress marks, etc. Just the denim fabrication is fine, thank you. So, ready to give it a whirl? Love them or hate them, it's hard to deny the options denim leggings offer. They are comfier than skinny jeans, but still retain that slim silhouette that doesn't seem to be going anywhere.
