In today’s tough economy, it makes more sense than ever to find ways to stretch the dollar. Shopping at thrift stores is one way to do this. Whether hoping to find designer vintage clothing, or just an update to a work wardrobe, thrift stores have a lot to offer a savvy shopper.

Why Shop at Thrift Stores?

There are many reasons why shopping at thrift and consignment stores make a lot of sense. Thrift stores are often inexpensive, making them ideal for anyone on a tight budget, or someone looking for a costume, or article of clothing that will only be worn once.

Vintage, designer and unique clothing items can often be found in thrift stores. This means that a shopper can put together a completely unique wardrobe of pieces that won’t be found anywhere else.

Thrift shopping is also green. By reusing old clothes, it keeps them out of landfills, and helps cut down on new production. Shopping at thrift and consignment stores can also help support small neighborhood shops or non-profit organizations.

What Can Be Purchased at Thrift Stores?

Thrift and consignment stores are excellent places to find clothing, new, used and vintage, as well handbags, jewelry and accessories. Costumes, shoes and boots can sometimes also be found.

Most of the items in thrift stores are in good shape, with a great deal of wear left in them.

How to Shop at a Thrift Store

Turnover at thrift stores can be high, so the first thing to keep in mind is to be patient and check back frequently. Allow plenty of time to shop, as aisles and racks may be crowded and it can take time to sort through it all.

If there is a dressing room available, take advantage of it and try everything on. Vintage sizing in clothes can be radically different than today’s sizing, so don’t merely go by the label. For the same reasons, don’t be afraid to try something on that is labeled in a size that appears far too large or small, if the garment itself looks like it could be approximately the right size. Don’t become hung up on the numbers on the labels, and score some unique items.

If an item appears too highly priced, or has some small but fixable flaw, don’t be afraid to barter. Many thrift stores will willingly take down a price to help move the merchandise. Consignment stores are often more firm on the price, but it can’t hurt to ask, so speak up.

Get to know the proprietor. Being on good terms with the proprietor and sales staff can help a shopper score extra goods. Find out what days new shipments arrive, and be first in line to look through the new items. Let the sales staff know if something in particular is desired, and if they see it come through, ask for a call. They probably will be unable to set the item aside, but knowing of its arrival can put a savvy shopper in the best position to snap it up.

Remember to avoid going crazy with clothing binges; just because things are cheap, doesn’t mean that they are going to get lots of use. Only purchase items that will actually get worn or used, and leave the other items behind for the next shopper.

If cleaning out a closet to make room for new purchases, try dropping off the old clothes at a thrift shop, or bring them to a consignment store for someone else to get more use from. Be discerning, relax and have fun while acquiring some great new clothes.
