Dallas-style shoulder pads and Miami Vice-like pushed-up sleeves, a modern makeover for the jumpsuit and all-over-animal prints prove that '80s fashion is back.

London Fashion Week has long been known as a trend launch pad of the fashion world., says successful online high-end fashion retailer, Net-A-Porter, in its September 26th Enewsletter, “London Fashion Week’s Favorite Looks,”

From established, classic British brands like Aquascutum and Jaegar London which appear to be going from strength-to strength in terms of fashion kudos, to the bright young talent of Christopher Kane, minimal elegance of Richard Nicholl, Luella Bartley’s and her ruffled tiered skirts, and Erdem’s Edwardiana lacy dresses.

Peter Pilotto caused a stir with his dramatic parrot-like prints and Jaeger London had somewhat of a fashion moment, with edgy paisley maxis, slouchy peg-leg pants and tunic blouses. Even Jasper Conran showcased a daringly sexy collection, saying in this time of economic gloom he “wanted to cheer people up.”

Trends to Watch for Spring 2009

A number of trends emerged in terms of wearable covetable clothes, (and less covetable, like horrendous harem pants and all over animal prints). The hottest tips, according to "Its back to shoulder pads as Top Shop embraces the '80s'" by Liz Jones of the Daily Mail (September 16, 2008)is the clashing of colors….. piling on the layers…. and wearing anything sheer.”

Here are is a breakdown of the main trends from the runways of London Fashion Week, according to the fashion team at Net-A-Porter:

  • 1980s – think shoulder pads and power dressing
  • Navy, cerise, lilac and lime – clash those colors for a trendy look
  • Ruffles and frills – layer upon layer
  • Sporty Chic
  • Peplum Waists
  • Harem Pants - Jumpsuits
  • All over animal prints

An Overview of Trends for 2009

The peplum waist made an entrance for the spring season on New York’s runways too. This style gives a feminine appear to an outfit with a drape that begins at the waistband and sits around the hips, according to The Fashion Designers Directory of Shape and Style (Page One: 2008).One less than feminine look is the continuation of harem pants, this season they have been incorporated into jumpsuit-styles too.

Black-and-white leopard prints claw their way back into season’ this time it’s an overkill all-over-body look, with animal print dresses,figure-hugging jumpsuits and cardigans.

Jumpsuits come into the category of Sporty Chic – you’ll also find 7/8th cropped pants and rolled or pushed-up sleeved-jackets, Miami Vice-style.

That bastion of British throw-away-fashion chain stores, Top Shop, showed off a collection of “80s inspired denim jumpsuits and Dallas style shoulder pads that would make Linda Evans and Joan Collins proud.

Lilac and lavender is a big look for spring, a softer and lighter color transformed from fall's purples and pinks. Black is banished to the back of the wardrobe, whilst other spring 2009 colors take on a fruity appeal with papaya, lemon and lime.

Bug-eyed glasses, chunky necklaces and layered chains are a feature of the fashion accessories trends, so are arc décor cuffs, which should continue to be piled high up the arm, like last season.
