The recession has made all of us think twice about spending. But it's possible to stay in fashion even on a small budget if you're willing to get a little creative.

Try these tips and tricks to stay in high style without shelling out a fortune.

Find a Thrift Store in the Nicest Neighborhood of Town

You may balk at the thought of shopping at Goodwill or the Salvation Army, but there are great finds when these stories are located in the most affluent communities. People often get rid of expensive, fashionable – even new – clothes simply because they don’t fit. Think designer labels for about $5 a garment or less.

Be prepared to spend some time weeding through all of the outdated stuff you would never wear, but the time investment will pay off. Thrift stores can also be a gold mine for vintage designer handbags.

Organize a Clothing Swap With Your Friends

Maybe you’re sick of looking at everything in your closet, but your friends probably aren’t. Chances are, you and your pals have similar styles, and what’s old to you may look new to them. So why not make a party of swapping some of your old clothes?

Send an invite asking each guest to bring 10 items of clothing they no longer want but are in good shape and style. Munch on appetizers and enjoy a glass of wine while you raid the closets of your best friends.

Browse Consignment Shops for Designer Deals

Consignment shops are home to gently used designer clothes for a fraction of the original price. They are more expensive than thrift stores, but they’re a better option for girls who hate to dig through junk because they only accept brand name clothing that is in good condition.

An added bonus: you can bring your own unwanted clothes and earn up to half of the selling price for every item they accept. Use your profits to do some shopping of your own.

Sign Up for Shopping Sale Alerts

Eyeing that Diane von Furstenberg dress but can’t afford it? Web sites like shopittome.com will browse the Web and send you email alerts when your favorite designers have sales. Choose which designers you want to keep on alert and then select how often you want to receive email updates. Get sale alerts weekly or even daily.

Wait Two Months After a Store Stocks Up for the Season to Go Shopping

Stores start selling bathing suits in February, when most of us are months away from actually wearing one. Resist the urge to buy all the exciting new stuff when it first hits the stores. By the time the weather heats up or cools off enough to wear the clothes, they will be on sale.

For even better deals, shop at the very end of the season. Stock up on basics like sleek black pumps and tall winter boots that you know will be in fashion next year.

I’m a semi-obsessed bargain-hunter, especially when it comes to designer fashion. This site seems to have gone up overnight: http://www.billblassonsale.com/ They’re selling off the entire stock of Bill Blass New York for 50% off, 75% if you buy in large lots, I think. Insanely awesome prices for recession-conscious fashionistas!
