For fans of the TV series Sex and the City, retail chain Marks and Spencer is launching a one-off collection, designed by the Sex and the City stylist, Patricia Field.
The hottest designer and personal stylist right now is Patricia Field, legendary stylist for the hit TV series Sex and the City. Forget Hollywood celebrity stylist Rachel Zoe and her Zoebots; the name Patricia Field is the one currently on the fashion industry's lips.
With her work on the much touted movie Sex and the City, and the TV series, (responsible for making Manolo Blahnik, Jimmy Choo and Fendi into a household name), celebrity stylist Patricia Field “is the most powerful woman in fashion right now.” according to the Daily Mail’s article “The Woman Behind the Clothes,” of 19th May 2008.
With movie and TV credits including The Devil Wears Prada and Ugly Betty, Field actually started working with the Sex and the City girls more by accident than by design. Originally, the producers disliked the clothes that character, Carrie Bradshaw was wearing, and Field was then recommended by Sarah Jessica Parker, who had worked previously worked with the stylist on the set of a 1995 movie.
Field has since won an Emmy for her work on the Sex and the City set, along with an Oscar nomination for The Devil Wears Prada. Sex and the City stars Sarah Jessica Parker and Kim Cattrall refer to her as a “rule-breaker,” with the ability to set trends all by herself.
"Patricia Field has an eye for putting together an outfit of mismatched components that somehow looks right,” says the Daily Mail. Such is the global popularity of the series, stylist Field is responsible in part for influencing the way fashion-forward Western women dress in the US and the world over. With her eclectic looks and her courage in breaking the rules of fashion, somehow Field manages to put together outfits which are eccentric yet commercially popular (and bankable.)
Fashion tends to go around in 20-year circles, according to Imogen Edwards-Jones, in her book, Fashion Babylon (Corgi books 2006). Key looks for the movie include Samantha (Kim Cattrall) in Dynasty-soap-inspired Armani and Gucci power suits – very 1980s. Carrie Bradshaw’s foot candy has favored Dior rather than Manolo, with, according to Field, a particular passion Bradshaw, (played by Sarah Jessica Parker) developed for a pair of Dior Extreme Sandals.
In a revolutionary move, for what was once considered a very conservative retailer in terms of British fashion, Marks and Spencer’s has hired Field to design a one-off collection for their stores. The designs are a well kept secret but will include a total of 35 outfits, from dresses to skirts to tops. These will incorporate on-trend prints with stars, stripes, polka dots and traditional florals; and no doubt a few ruffles and volumnous frocks.
This is a historical turning point for Marks and Spencer, as they have never entered into such a one-off agreement with a designer before. With retail outlets in major cities all over the globe, (including Istanbul, Dubai and Bangkok), Marks and Spencer is bring commercial-style Sex and the City fashion (and some of New York’s hottest trends) to the women of the world.
The collection is called “The Patricia Field for M&S Collection” and will be in available in selected stores from October 2008.
