They've always been a difficult daytime look to easily get to grips with, but there are ways to wear sequins confidently and with style while the sun's up.

Sequins can be a serious faux pas on any day aside from Christmas, so here are some tips to help you sparkle without overdoing it.

  • When you’re wearing sequins during the day, you don’t want to overload with chunky jewellery and skyscraper heels, which are popular with a lot of the other looks this season. Choose a few bangles and flats to help dress down your sparkles, without making them look frumpy.
  • Although statement bags are big this Autumn/Winter, try to avoid clashing a bold purse with an already loud outfit. Sequins can look great if they’re left to be the single statement piece of your outfit.
  • Wearing sequins to work can seem a little daunting. Luckily this season there are a few helpful styles that can dress down your vibrant ensemble without invoking the dreaded “walk of shame” look. Here are a few helpful wardrobe helpers that will turn your sequins sultry yet sensible.

Boyfriend Blazer

The boyfriend blazer is a big hitter this A/W, matching up with several of the on-trend style routes already. Teaming a smart-but-fashion-forward blazer with a sequined top or jumper is a hot daytime look, bringing that no-nonsense style to what could be a frivolous top.

Try matching bronze, silver or blue sequins with a grey blazer, making sure you roll the sleeves up, Duran Duran-style. Add a pair of peg cut trousers and some black ballerina pumps, and you're rock chic-cool before it's even hit lunchtime.

Jeggings/Treggings

Not necessarily a work staple, but for a day spent at the shops or meeting friends at the pub/coffee house you don't want to be dressed up to the nines, but you do still want a bit of glam. Jeggings are therefore your godsend this A/W, because as we all know, the tighter the jeans, the hotter the trend.

The half-legging half-jeans superhero-hybrid that is the jegging will bring down the glam of your glitz, but they'll make sure you still look 100% bang on trend. Team with a sequin-detailed tunic or vest and add a long cardigan and there you go – your new "can't live without" outfit.

Flats

We all love flats for daytime wear - so comfy yet so goes-with-everything. For work, invest in some pretty black or neutral ballerina pumps to wear with your newly-aquired sequin-heavy wardrobe.

They'll dress you down without causing a dowdy scene. If you're feeling brave with the leggings-to-work idea, wear an over-sized long line sequin-detailed jumper or top and flat pumps with a small amount of detailing on, such as a buckle or chain. They'll take you from office to bar effortlessly.

Plaits/Braids

It might take a little longer to get ready in the mornings, but you can trust a French plait in your fringe to bring down the harsh night time tone of a sequin dress.Braids bring nature and fresh-faced maidens to mind, and so it's only natural that if you weave one in or even buy one, your outfit will magically take on those characteristics. If you're dexterity's not too great, don't worry - there are plenty of braided headbands to choose from to help beautify your barnet.

However you choose to wear your sequins, remember to walk tall and bring confidence to your look. Sequins are not for the timid.
