It's time to freshen up your spring and summer wardrobe by following some of the new and easy styling tips of the season.

From ruffles to metallics, florals to nautical and maxi dress to smock, there are so many fashion trends to choose from right now that it is a good idea to pick just one or two and make them your own. Adding a few simple touches, by applying some style tips from the main looks of the season will bring your outfits right up to date.

10 Simple Style Tips to Improve Your Fashion Style This Season

  1. This spring/summer go for a hard clutch and match it with your outfit for a head-to-toe look. If you are carrying a small strap bag, then leave the strap hanging around your wrist and carry it as a clutch.
  2. Choose big, bold, chunky jewelry for a dramatic effect. Bracelet cuffs are in this season; wear them back-to-back (or arm-to-arm!). If you pile them on, then minimize the rest of your jewelry.
  3. 2008 is the year of the cinched waist. You can cinch in an oversized knit or a baggy blouse with a utilitarian belt, rather than invest in this season’s wide one.
  4. The '70s revival in pussy bows need not only be on your blouse. Take a printed scarf, the most versatile accessory of the season, and “tie it in a bow around your neck for a sweet and quirky effect,” says Marie Claire, March 2008 Australian edition. Alternatively wear a scarf around your waist or your wrist for an even more edgy look.
  5. Bright-white is the most versatile color of the season. Add some sophisticated gold accessories to an all-white outfit for a touch of class. Pep up a classic white blouse with some cufflinks or cinch in the waist with a belt.
  6. Break the rules by wearing glitter, sequins and sparkles for a new take on daywear. If wearing metallics then “finish them off with whites, creams and neutrals for a crisp, clean look,” says Shop Til U Drop, November 2007 edition.
  7. Soften the masculine lines of wide-leg pants with a fluid blouse or top, tucked into the waistband. If you are wearing ruffles around the neckline then avoid jewelry in that area. Wear a cuff instead.
  8. If you choose to wear this season’s ruffles then keep the rest of your outfit simple. Wear a ruffle blouse with a plain skirt or pants and keep jewelry to a minimum.
  9. Make the most of '70s-style platforms and wedges whilst they are in vogue. They balance out the bulk from maxi dresses, wide–legged pants, jumpsuits and the voluminous smock type styles of the season.
  10. Try this year’s more delicate designer take on gladiator sandals to complement a maxi dress or mini. Ankle boots also go well with a mini dress, but balance out lower bulk by covering up with a bolero or cropped cardigan on top. Throw a masculine tuxedo style jacket over a maxi dress to toughen it up This is currently a favorite celebrity look of the season!
