Rock chic-style encompasses a softer biker vibe for Fall 2008, with leather skirts, skinny-legged pants and cropped jackets

The look is skinny, lean and not-so-mean, with skintight trousers, skyscraper heels and reinvented biker jackets in leather and tweeds. Sexy rather than scary, jackets from Alexander McQueen and Givenchy take on a softer twist when worn with pencil skirts or over dresses.

Goth gowns get a rock-chic makeover, by adding ruffles and chiffon layers for a gothic yet romantic look. From Giles and Luella to Givenchy’s off-the-shoulder ruffles, toughen them up with skintight and skinny leather pants. Try black on black with textured layers, such as Chloé's sheer tunic dresses or Rodarte’s wispy looks.

The Cropped Leather Jacket for Fall 2008

The biker jacket is the jacket of the season. Thanks to celebrities like Kate Moss, Elle Macpherson and Amy Winehouse, it is even hotter than ever. This leather jacket is versatile enough to transcend age groups. A fashion conscious 50-year old can look just as good in a cropped jacket as a 20-something, as Joan Rivers (75) will attest; appearing chic and stylish in her red biker-style.

One of this season’s trends is to wear a cropped jacket over a neutral dress, and team it with tights and ankle boots or patent wedges. In keeping with this fall’s popular androgynous look, pair it with some skinny leather pants. Part of the cropped jacket's success is attributed to this year’s high-waisted pants and skirts, showing-off the waist-detailing and balancing out the silhouette.

The best biker jackets from high-end designers include Alexander McQueen, Dolce & Gabbana, Marc Jacobs, Rick Owens and 3.1 Phillip Lim. Net-A-Porter features them all.

Rock-Chic Style for Fall 2008

Mix polished pieces with zips, studs and leather. Use a biker jacket to dress down a silk blouse and skirt. Cinch in a simple shift dress at the waist and contrast the look with edgy accessories and a cropped jacket.

For real rock n’ roll style, squeeze yourself into a pair of skintight pants; add some patent platforms and a shiny clutch purse. Wear “treggings,” a cross between leggings and trousers for a skintight look. Find them in shiny metallics and spray-on fabrics, in anything but denim. However, be warned, treggings are mainly for those who are tall and slender. If you are short, then team them with high-heeled boots or pumps, to give you a sleeker, slender appearance.

If skinny pants are not your scene then pair a biker jacket with some man-style wide –legged pants and a scarf, tie or smart hat to complete the look. In fact, throw a cropped leather jacket over almost anything this season, from a maxi dress to sexy pencil skirt, for a very on-trend look.

Fall Fashion Accessories

Add some edgy accessories like tough-girl studs, spikes and chains. Layers upon layers, like Givenchy’s chunky chains are favored by celebrities; like Madonna, at her 50th birthday party on August 16th, 2008. Find spikes and studs on purses, belts and ankle boots, not to mention a zip or two. Biker Boots are also back with a vengeance, with their flat chunky heels and tough attitude.
