Potentially embarrassing wardrobe malfunctions can happen any time, any place. Here's what to do if your fabulous outfit turns against you.
Celebrity wardrobe malfunctions make great headline news, but these embarasing accidents do not discriminate: anyone can pop a button or stick a zipper. Fortunately, everyday wardrobe malfunctions don't make headline news, and they can be avoided by using the following tips: Stick It Up – Repair a Rip or Fallen Hem With TapeKeep a few strips of double-stick tape handy in case of emergencies. A bit of tape with adhesive on both sides will get you out of a number of dilemmas. Cleavage hanging out of your blouse? Some double stick tape will hold things together. If a button pops off or a hem comes loose use the tape to hold things together until you can get it mended. You can buy double stick tape at beauty supply stores, home improvement stores, drugstores and costume shops as well as wig shops. For around $5. Blot That Spot – Remove a Stain on ClothingThe faster you treat a stain, the less permanent damage it will do to the fabric. If possible, a wet paper towel or a clean cloth to remove as much of the stain as possible. Then treat it with laundry pretreatment and launder immediately. Never put a stained garment in the dryer, as heat will set the stain. Never rub, it spreads the stain and damages the fabric. Instead, blot with water. Club soda earned its claim to fame as a spot remover because the bubbles seems to provide assistance in removing the stain. Re-attach Patches With StaplesIf a uniform patch (or scout badge, or elbow patch, etc.) starts to liberate itself from the fabric, grab a stapler and re-attach it fast. When you get a chance to sew it back on properly, leave the staples in to keep it from moving out of alignment and then remove the staples when you're done. Stop Nylon Runs With Fingernail PolishYou're look is perfect and then you snag your stocking or tights. Dab on some clear fingernail polish at both ends of the run to stop it in its tracks. Use a Marker to Hide Scuff MarksTo quickly disguise scuff marks on shoes, color in the roughed up area with a matching permanent marker. Remove Ink With AlcoholIf a pen leaks on clothing, remove the ink by spraying an alcohol-containing hair spray on the ink and then blot with a damp paper towel. If hairspray isn't available, head for the first aid kit: disinfecting alcohol wipes work just as well. Pencil Trick for Sticky ZippersTo fix a stuck zipper, run the tip of an ordinary pencil down the sticky track; the graphite acts as a lubricant to quickly free the zipper. Missing Button, Clasp or Hook?Quickly replace a missing clasp, button, or hook with a paper clip. Simply unbend the end a little, feed it through the fabric and button hole and hide the body of the paper clip by shifting it to the inside of the garment. The essentials: be prepared for wardrobe malfunctions by keeping a strip of double stick tape, a small bottle of clear nail polish, and a mini sewing kit on hand for emergencies.
