This season is all about letting your leggings do the talking with graphics and powerful prints. From plaid to paisley, Aztec to animal, striped to spotted; patterned leggings are one of the cheapest yet biggest fashion statements for those who dare-to-wear.
Whether you love or loathe them, leggings are everywhere this summer, from high-street to high-end designer labels, such as the jazzy prints from Alexander McQueen's Spring 2009 collection.
Who Can Wear Leggings?
Leggings, have long been the domain of the slender-in-leg and slight-of-frame and for those women the right-side of 30! Undeniably, leggings are not the most flattering when it comes to fashion. They can show every bulge and cling in all the wrong places. They can accentuate chunky thighs and knobbly knees. With no pockets, stitching or firm material to hide the lumps and bumps, leggings can be as cruel as they are fashionable.
However, according to Grazia magazine’s "Legs Go Crazy " of 25 May 2009, these graphic, eye-catching prints can hide a multitude of sins "distracting rather than attracting," deflecting attention from the bumpy bits.
How to Wear Printed Leggings
A clingy, tight fitting top is a no-no. The fashion statement of the season is to wear them with oversized tees, long shirts (belted?) or a plain-colored, simple tunic-style dress. To make chunky legs look more slender, leggings should finish just below the bulge of your calf.
Choose shoes carefully. High-heels make legs look more slender or wear leggings with some simple flats. Don’t compete with statement shoes, the jazzy patterns are enough of a statement on their own.

One of the widest choices of fashion-print leggings is from Daddy Long Legs. The Hong Kong/UK based label offers everything from Picasso prints to leopard prints and florals. These leggings have a high waistband, giving a very slimming effect.
Treggings and Jeggings Trend
Leggings have become fashion furniture, transcending seasons. Two hybrids, Treggings and Jeggings (a combination of skinny jeans and leggings), have also recently emerged, and may provide a welcome alternative for those women who would never wear leggings in their basic form. A combination of trousers or jeans and leggings, these have a waistband, a fly, more lycra than the average air of stretch jeans or pants, and are more forgiving in the figure department!
From beach to bar or day to evening, printed leggings offer a fun alternative to trousers for Summer 2009, for those who dare to wear one of this season's biggest trends.
