One-shoulder is definately better than two this season! According to Moriamo Oshodi, Womenswear Head Buyer at Asos.com, the look's “funky-meets-classic edge, translates for seasons to come.”
Give your wardrobe the bold shoulder with asymmetric necklines and striking and sexy one-shoulder dresses and tops.
Runways were awash with sassy styles, from Lanvin’s many bold, colorful pieces in everything from leopard print to huge shoulder bows, to Alexander McQueen’s short sharp shapes. Balmain, Balenciaga Sophia Kokosalaki and Calvin Klein also embraced the trend. You'll find them in spring and summer's strong fruity colors such as orange, tangerine, raspberry and lime and gorgeous fabrics such as chiffon, satin and silk.
One-shoulder Trends for 2009
One-shoulder trends are far from new as there heritage dates back to the toga days of ancient Greece. Whilst the one-shouldered goddess gown is still making headlines on the red carpet, this spring sees short, sassy dresses in bold bright colors such as orange and pink. One-shoulder dresses also take on elements of the cut-out trend, space-age dresses which reveal more flesh.
From the runways of Lanvin comes a more classical approach, incorporating Grecian folds to enhance volume and give a romantic floaty impression.
One shoulder dressing is subtly sexy. The diagonal line narrows across the upper body and the look is seductive without being slutty. According to Fashionishing.com “Shoulders are sexy. More mysterious than cleavage and more elegant than legs; shoulders remind us of the delicacy and vulnerability of the neck.”
To wear a one-shouldered style well then a good strapless bra is essential to give an uplifting silhouette, and smooth shoulders are a must, so exfoliate if necessary.
Celebrity Trends
Many celebrities such as Gwyneth Palthrow, Kate Winslet, Drew Barrymore, Rihanna and Rachel Bilson have showcased gorgeous one-shoulder numbers, from glamorous red carpet gowns or single-shouldered dramatic self-colored mini-dresses. The most famous one-shouldered evening dress of all this season has to be Michelle Obama’s white Swarovski embellished crystallized gown by Jason Wu, which she wore at the January 20th, 2009 Inauguration Evening Ball for President Obama.
Shoulder Detailing
Shoulders are big this spring, its all in the details! Whether it’s a bold one shoulder dress or a flounced shoulder that rises high like a ruff. It’s also time to dust off those shoulder pads as ‘80s power dressing is back, with strong structured shapes with exaggerated shoulders, wide lapels and cinched in waists, as in Gianfranco Ferré's hourglass shapes.
One-shouldered Swimwear
To take the trend a stage further, invest in a single-shouldered bikini or monokini. Designers Marios Schwab and Hervé Ledger lead the way on the spring runways. Gottex’s 2009 collection features a clever halter neck which looks like a one-shouldered monokini, but has better support.
Whether it’s a mini-dress or maxi, an asymmetric goddess gown or dramatic one-shouldered top, there is no doubt that the one-shoulder trend is already a winner, with bold shoulders being a key feature of this year’s trends.
