New York Runway Trends for Fall 2009Key Looks in Women's Fashion for Autumn Winter 2009
From leopard prints to space-age shoulders, textured dresses and tight pants. The runways of New York Fashion Week give us a glimpse of key looks for fall.
Whilst main street shops are waiting with baited breath for the spring collections to arrive, February and March 2009 see the rest of the fashion world take one step ahead, showcasing their new collections for next season, in New York, London, Milan and Paris. Many of spring’s trends will be continued through for the rest of the year. These include animal prints, bold bright colors, bandage dresses, and shiny one-shoulder numbers and suits. The key theme of New York’s fashion week was an ‘80s revival. Shiny metallics, rich fabrics, bold colors and even bolder space-age shoulders, from the runways of Oscar De La Renta, Michael Kors, Carolina Herrera, Marc Jacobs and Donna Karan. Animal PrintsLeopard, tiger and zebra prints run wild again, so don’t put them away in your closet just yet. Runway collections were literally littered with leopard prints, with floor-length dresses, coats, leggings, sweaters and big belts. Oscar de la Renta showcased a particularly vampy collection of leopard print dresses and ‘80s style coats. A new twist was the mixing of old fashion tweeds and plaids with animal prints, from Donna Karan. Bold ShouldersStatement shoulders continue to make a bold impression this fall. However, throw away those shoulder pads, as shoulders have been given a sculptural futuristic feel instead, courtesy of Max Azria and Hervé Léger. Oscar de la Renta favors voluminous sleeves and Carolina Herrera and Calvin Klein build up their shoulders to the max. Colors for Fall 2009Less traditional fall hues of reds, blues or purples brighten up a winter’s day, with some new neutrals in the form of gray and beige mixes, as outlined in Pantone's Fashion Color Report for Fall 2009. There was plenty of metallic shine with reflective colors of gold, silver and bronze, and a continuation of spring 2009's poular orange, in muted shades. For those who shy away from eye-popping brights then wardrobe staple monochromes came in the form of dramatic evening gowns from Oscar de la Renta and dramatic prints from Diane Von Furstenberg, Philip Lim and Matthew Williamson. Dresses for Fall 2009One-shoulder dresses continue to be a key trend, with modern toga styles being injected with plenty of draping, reflective materials and low necklines from Diane Von Furstenberg and Pamela Roland. Grease-style off-the-shoulder numbers also took center stage. All hail the much-loved figure-hugging bandage dress which made its mark on the spring runways. It gets a wintry makeover with bulkier materials and embellishments such as shiny panels and sequins. Textures for Fall 2009Fall winter is all about textures, with all kinds of fabrics adding body to an outfit. Brocade, velvet, leather, lace fur and chiffon — mixing and matching, creating an almost three-dimensional effect. Carolina Herrera’s two-tone jacquard bandage dress with caped-sleeve effect is one such example of clever graphic detailing, accentuating every curve. There was plenty of velvet from the runways of Marc Jacobs, with structured sculpted corset dresses in bright colors. Trousers for Fall 2009Bold colored leather trousers, skin-tight, were the order of the day from Matthew Williamson. Philip Lim showcased some super-slim cigarette pants to be paired with white tuxedo jackets whilst Carolina Herrera offered up some hot-looking narrow-leg trousers as part of an elegant satin suit. Whatever key trends you choose to embrace this coming fall, take comfort in the fact that spring's citrusy colors of tangerine and orange will still be in vogue. Also a safe investment is a one-shoulder number and a piece in animal prints, as these will transcend seasons, taking you fashionably through from spring to fall.
