Yigal Azrouël's latest looks combine dramatic shapes, draped fabrics and feminine, loosely knotted hair.

Fashion designer Yigal Azrouël's latest collection joins bold geometric shapes and diaphanous fabrics for a look that is at once sleek, and artfully undone. Elegance meets a carefree spirit. High drama meets laissez faire.

The Yigal Azrouël Collection

Yigal Azrouël is known as a self-taught, expert draper. His designs are fresh and modern, refined yet wearable. Silhouettes are dramatic, with exaggerated geometric shapes and bold colours intermixed with body-hugging free flowing forms and muted colours. The look is at once structured, and fluid.

Antoinette Beenders, Vice President Global Creative Director for Aveda, who also developed hairstyles for Christian Siriano's show, was responsible for creating the feminine yet edgy styles seen at the Yigal Azrouël show during New York Fashion Week. The designer's creations were presented by models sporting hair that appeared quickly put together – messy, yet neat.

How to Get the Look

This style can be adapted for day or evening looks, and is easy to achieve at home. Here's how:

  • Divide hair into two sections, top and bottom.
  • Spray top section of hair with water and massage with a texturizing cream and pomade.
  • Slick the sides of hair tightly back with a comb.
  • Create a low ponytail at the nape of the neck with a clear elastic band.
  • Straighten the ponytail with a flat-iron.
  • Rake back the top section of hair with fingers.
  • Draw the hair back into a second elastic and pull halfway through.
  • Use fingers to bring out loose pieces of hair to create a messy knot.

About Yigal Azrouël

Of French-Moroccan descent but born and raised in Israel, Yigal Azrouël now lives and works in New York City. The designer launched his women's wear label in 1998, and instantly received critical acclaim. In 2003 he opened his flagship boutique in New York's meatpacking district, a unique and innovative space created in collaboration with designer Dror Benshetrit. In 2007, Yigal Azrouël introduced a line of sportswear for men, as well as an accessories collection.

The designer finds inspiration in the city itself, as well as in everything that surrounds him – art and culture, nature and architecture. His latest collection, says the designer "is inspired by geometry. Fabrics are slashed with scalpel precision to create bold, graphic shapes (…) The collection and silhouettes are more defined and structured than ever."

"As always," says Azrouël, "the focus is on the fabric"
