Milan Runway Trends for Fall 2008
Military trend – more traditional influences evolve this season, with structured tailoring from Alexander McQueen, Phillip Lim, Temperley, Aquascutum, Burberry and Moschino.Military embellishments like epaulettes, frogging and brass buttons are found on dresses, jackets, coats and capes — with military stand-up collars
Paisley prints, once attributed to preppies and hippies, has a strong influence this season. Etro takes on a futuristic look in paisley print jackets and skirts; whilst Burberry and D&G go for bold paisley dresses, and Luisa Beccaria, a prime Miss Haversham look.
Architectural shapes are undoubtedly the most dramatic look of Fall 2008. Outfits have strong sculpted necklines, bold shoulders or one-shoulder looks. Coats are big and brash, with quirky oversized collars from Gianfranco Ferré, Marni and Emanuel Ungaro; not to mention Victor and Rolf’s statement, “No” collared-coat! Bold Shoulders and voluminous sleeves are extraordinary details which transform simple styles. Neck jewelry is also big and over-the-top, from the runways of Prada, Burberry, Emilio Pucci and Just Cavalli.
Luxe Sportswear with a ‘70s sporty-suited look come from Dolce & Gabbana, Moschino and Just Cavalli. Marc Jacobs offers relaxed and slouchy looks, which are more at home on the runways than in the gym.
The Long and Lean trend involves sleek, slimming styles which create a fluid silhouette. These include soft gray neutrals from Bottega Veneta and Max Mara or skinny pant suits from Jill Sander, or pastels from Prada. Enter treggings, worn with matching rock-chic leather jackets, for a lean and mean look.
Amazing Lace remerges on the runways, with a modern make-over. Featuring heavily in dresses from Dolce and Gabbana and Prada, this is an elegant and demure look. According to Miucca Prada, lace is the one fabric that transcends each of a woman’s life cycles — birth, death and everything in between.
These are just some of the looks which embody fall and winter women's fashions. Other influences from the world's runways include Medieval-inspired looks from New York, Gothic glamour and a passion for plaid.
