The classic flare, the most flattering of all jean cuts has been supersized this season, to cover our sky-high statement shoes and slimline our legs. A case in point is Victoria Beckham, whose image has been splashed all over internet blogs and glossy magazines, wearing her own range of full flares, from her DVB collection. In the Daily Mail’s article of 1st April 2008, “Posh Keeps it Casual and Launches a New Trend in ‘70s-style Flares,” Beckham appears to be setting a new trend with her supersized flares.
More feminine and flattering than the skinny jean, In Style.com says that "the flare remains the most universal fit and is a flattering style for almost every body type." A-listers like Ms Beckham, Nicole Ritchie and Heidi Klum are springing into summer with their Retro-look, long-hemmed bell-bottom jeans.
Whilst high quality designer DVB jeans do not come cheap, with Beckham’s volumnous kick flares at around £250, there are budget high-street versions. Online fashion store Asos has a pair of DVB skinny flared jeans with star pockets at £225 but also has a plaited-back flared jean for £30. Going more upmarket for a quality fit, Net-A-Porter has some classic stonewash Sass and Bide Slinger Flared Jeans at £175 and True Religion’s Joey Flares and 18th Amendment’s Harlow Jeans are also worth a look. Shopbop.com has a huge variety of flares avaiable.
The much loved British fashion chain, Topshop, shortly to be opening a flagship store in New York has a pair of very affordable (£40) dark-wash flares, which according to Look magazine, 2nd June, "The Jumbo Flare Has Landed," is styled to streamline bums and tums.
For an authentic ‘70s style then consider a pair of Ditto classic flares, the original premium jean brand in the 1970s, according to Retro to Go. Shopbop.com are currently selling these for around £80 ($150), and Asos stocks a variety of Dittos designs. Add a floppy wide brimmed hat and a pussy-bow blouse and you can’t get anymore retro!
