This guide will help you to choose the right shade of blue to suit your complexion, and tell you which blue hues are fashionable for fall 2008

For some women of the world, blue, especially navy, conjures up images of school or naval uniforms and not-so fond memories of a time when blue was a compulsory color during their formative years. But for anyone who shies away from blue, forget royal blue and navy, there are, in fact, a whole range of shades, for you to experiment with.

Blue is a universal color, the color of the sky and the sea. It is a foolproof fashion staple – there isn’t a shade that it doesn’t look good next to. However, that doesn’t mean to say that it needs to be straight-up primary blue, which can be harsh on some skin tones, but bright turquoise or Caribbean blue or gentle sage, teal or stronger periwinkle.

Teal blue is a major fall fashion color for 2008, right there with chocolate and charcoal, pink, plum and purple.

The Right Blue for Your Skin Tone

Choosing the wrong shade of blue can be too harsh on your skin tone, but the right shade of blue can bring out your eyes better than any eyeshadow and light-up your complexion.

  • Fair-haired women with pale complexions look stunning in periwinkle blue. It has a hint of purple, and is not icy-cold or pale.
  • Medium to light brown-haired women, look good in turquoise or teal. The warmth of their skin complements these colors.
  • Women with dark hair and dark eyes can wear almost any shade of blue, and probably suit navy, more than any other skin tone.

How to Wear Blue

Navy blue is an excellent alternative for those who don’t want to wear black. It is slimming and chic (especially with black or this fall's charcoal gray) and is a seasonless classic.

According to Trinny & Susannah, in their website article "How to Wear Dark Blue," dark blues go well with other darker colors, whilst a bright royal blue and a deep purple or burgundy look good together.

Unless you want to look like you are wearing a naval uniform, avoid wearing only white with blue.

Blue Shades for Fall Winter 2008

Blueish greens are a good choice for fall, teal is a fashion favorite from the runways. Wear teal with sliver gray and metallic accessories for an on-trend look.

The color purple reigns supreme for autumn and winter, mainly lilac/purple undertones mixed with blue. In Pantone’s Color Report for Fall 2008, (the most widely recognized color standard in the world of fashion design) a shade labeled Blue Iris is named as the color of the year. This is a rich beautiful blue with purple undertones. Other shades listed in the report include Caribbean and a deeper twilight blue, a twist on navy.
