Cheetahs, leopards, and ocelots, oh my! Animal prints are all over the fall runways. Learn how to work this exotic trend into your wardrobe.

Animal prints are one of fall’s biggest fashion trends, and has the promise of sticking around well into spring. So now is as good of time as any to work big cat spots into your wardrobe.

Models and Hollywood starlets alike have been stepping out in bold, all-over animal prints. But without the magic combination of height, frame, status, and flamboyant career, wearing animal print from head to toe is generally too much. The goal is too add rich texture and pattern into your wardrobe, not look like you have recently been on safari, skinned a wild cat, and wore it home on the airplane.

Here are a few tips to wearing the lush and classic pattern.

Animal Accessories

Too much of a bold print like leopard or cheetah can overwhelm even the most confident women. And it doesn’t take much for animal prints to go from high fashion to low brow (think too many spots paired with too much black leather, and bright red lips…this is not the look of season.)

Start small by adding one feature accessory in an animal print. A classic pair of pumps in leopard print will remain relevant and can be worn for years. A sleek cheetah print clutch or purse will complement an otherwise neutral outfit. If you’re going bold with one feature piece, then balance the look by wearing items with simple lines and neutral palettes.

Colour Swap

One of the most striking, and therefore potentially overwhelming, things about animal prints is the pattern’s likeness to the real thing. To achieve a softer, subtle effect try animal prints in non-realistic colours, like cream and soft purple. If all the colours in the wheel are an option, you can select more subdued tones that are more flattering to your colouring than the lifelike orange and brown spots.

Animal prints will be at the forefront of fashion for the next few seasons, and simple pieces, like classic pumps or an elegant clutch never really go out of style. There’s no better time to invest in a spotted accessory, and show off your wild side.
