There are countless ways to accessorize with scarves. A few of the most popular ideas use them as chic hair accents.

Several ways of tying scarves to accent a hairstyle have become wildly popular. Not only are hair scarves fashionable, but they can be pretty useful too. Scarves can be excellent lifesavers for those mornings when the "do" just doesn’t want to cooperate. And, after the wind or humidity has done its worst, a scarf surreptitiously stashed in a handbag can disguise a bad hair day with style. Here are three trendy ideas for wearing a head scarf.

Tying Traditional Head Scarves

One timeless and trendy way to wear a scarf brings to mind the Euro-peasant look.

  • Fold a square scarf along the bias into a triangle.
  • Drape scarf over hair with the folded side just behind the hairline.
  • Take hold of the triangles ends and bring them behind the neck.
  • Tie in a knot.
  • Allow tails to hang beneath hair or tuck into the scarf.

Accessorizing a Hairstyle with Scarves

A scarf worn as a hair accessory can be the perfect accent to top off any outfit. Creating a sassy scarf headband is easy.

  • Roll a scarf into a tube or fold into a narrow band.
  • Drape over top of head
  • Tie behind neck with a simple slip knot (see instructions bellow).
  • Position the knot either under the hair or to the side and allow tails to flow freely.

Tying a scarf around a ponytail can lend a retro, bohemian look. Smaller silk scarves are excellent for wrapping around a ponytail or bun

  • Pull all or part of hair into a ponytail and secure with a rubber band.
  • Roll a scarf into a tube or fold into a narrow band.
  • Take hold of both ends and position the middle of the scarf beneath the base of the ponytail.
  • Wrap around the ponytail until tails are the desired length.
  • Tie with a simple slip knot (see instructions bellow (.
  • Allow tails to hang freely.

Tying a Headband or Ponytail with a Simple Slip Knot

Both the headband and ponytail scarves’ knots may be visible. A simple slip knot can make the tails hang well. It takes a little practice tying a knot behind the neck, but this one makes the job fairly easy.

  • Before beginning, tie a half knot a few inches up one side of the scarf but do not pull tight.
  • Once the scarf is in place in the hair, pull the other tail through the half knot.
  • Pull the half knot tight evening up the lengths of the tails in the process.

When it comes to creative ideas for these versatile accessories, wearing scarves to accent hairstyles is just the beginning. Readers may also want to check out fashion tips for tying scarves and other suggestions for using them to dress up an outfit.
