Learn how to work a few basic wardrobe pieces into many holiday outfit situations. Mixing and matching will help to save money and get the most wear out of a wardrobe.

The holidays are a time of joy for many people because they get to spend time with relatives and friends more often. However, this time is often spent at numerous holiday gatherings that require buying gifts, baking something to bring, and dressing up. Keeping a wardrobe that is stocked with a few good items can get anyone through the season looking great and feeling fabulous at every party they attend.

Holiday Wardrobe Pieces

  • A strapless, spaghetti strap or short sleeved dress in a material like silk or a textured cotton
  • A nice knit cardigan sweater in cotton or cashmere
  • A simple black skirt
  • A nice silk shell top
  • A few pairs of tights or stockings
  • A wide waist belt
  • A great statement necklace or earrings
  • A pair of comfortable heels or flats (or both)
  • A mid-sized bag

Some of these items are things that many women probably already have in their closets. Remember to look there first before spending money on new items!

Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving tends to be a home-based holiday spent with family, so erring on the side of casual is perfectly acceptable. Pair the silk shell top with the skirt and tights. Throw on the cardigan and a pair of flats and the look is complete!

Family Holiday Party or Office Party

If Great Aunt Louise is still a bit squeamish about the idea of a mini skirt, stick with conventional for the family party. Wear the dress belted with a pair of tights and heels. Pick one statement piece of jewelry and cover up with a cardigan. A mid-sized bag is all you need to hold a wallet, lipstick and cell phone while munching on crudites with your co-workers.

Holiday Party with Friends

Let your hair down a little among friends. Pair the skirt and silk top with stockings and a great necklace. Bring the cardigan in case it gets cold, but leave the option of sleeveless just in case they have the heat turned way up. A pair of pretty heels will take this look to the next level!

New Year's Eve

Looking fantastic is half the fun on New Year's Eve! Wear the dress belted, sheer stockings, heels (substitute the comfortable ones for a sexy, sky-high style if possible!) and a piece of jewelry. If spending the evening at a party or a club, don't bother wearing the cardigan. Just throw on a coat that can be checked at the door and be free to dance without the hassle of carrying a cardigan around.
