Holiday Fashion Fall/Winter 2007Sequins and Dresses Will Be Popular Fashion Items Until 2008A preview of what to wear and how to wear it during the upcoming 2007-2008 holidays.
Holiday fashion always calls for a little shine, but the sparkle and glitter shown in this season’s clothing has been positively blinding! For day-to-day wear, it’s a bit much, but why not have fun when dressing up for a party or gathering? As long as a look doesn’t overwhelm, some glitz and glamour can brighten anyone’s mood. The Dress Every Woman Will Own (Or At Least Try On): Juicy Couture Sequin Tank Dress ($298). Available in grey or black, this knit-and-sequined striped tank dress has been popping up in every catalog and store. (There’s even a children’s version with short sleeves instead of sleeveless.) The dress is bold and works well on taller frames; the thick stripes may overwhelm some smaller frames -- always try on to be sure. For an investment such as this, it's ideal to have more than one way to wear the dress. A great option is to belt it as a tunic, worn over skinny jeans or leggings with heels. It makes it much more casual. Or loosely belt a trench over the dress so that the sequins peek through. Target has inexpensive satin trenches and coats, perfect for outdoor events. The coat is part of the outfit. It’s a way to stay warm and fashionable. Looking ahead to next spring: wear the dress over a white tank or white leggings and flip flops. Another Inspiring Example: Alice + Olivia Paillette Jersey Dress ($385). This black, spaghetti-strapped dress is covered in paillettes (large sequins). It’s fun and has a slightly 1960s-vibe. Put a belted or cardigan sweater over it during the day; remove the sweater and add heels at night. Use these examples for what’s currently in style – and remember that the same look can be found for less money. Scour “teen” stores or the Internet for the same type of dress. Rampage has several sequined dresses for less than $100. Anyone who’s good at sewing can make their own! No Sequined Dresses, Please: Prefer a dress that doesn’t reflect light? Instead of a “little black dress”, choose grey. It’s the color of the season. Accessorize with holiday-friendly colors, including silver or cranberry. Add shine in other ways, such as shoes or handbag. Covering Up: A sparkly shawl or wrap is elegant, but for use of both hands, opt for a cardigan instead. Wear it unbuttoned, or loosely thrown over shoulders for an even more casual look. Can’t Live Without Jeans: For those that can’t seem to part with their favorite jeans, be sure pay extra attention to top and accessories. There are many tanks and sweaters that are as feminine and embellished as the dresses listed above. No Sequins On My Top, Either: Holidays also call for coziness – a sweater looks especially nice when it’s not too tight and not oversized. Choose cashmere (or soft cotton if allergies are an issue) and pay attention to details such as buttons. But remember, play up the sequins while they’re still in style… time will only tell what next year's holiday season brings!
