Caleb Granger is the founder of God’s Daughter Clothing, a San Diego-based company that manufactures t-shirts and tank tops for women, all with an empowering message emblazoned across the front. Be it “Precious”, “Beautiful”, “Captivating” or “Priceless”, this message is meant to inspire hope and self-confidence in its bearer. “What a lie is being perpetrated on women,” he says. “I wanted to find a way to reinforce what true beauty is…it’s a birthright.”

A California-native with a burden on his heart, Granger is truly one of the good guys. Having self-funded this important project, his efforts to celebrate the value of women go well beyond making and selling these tees. Proceeds from sales go to support Elizabeth House, a shelter in Pasadena, California for pregnant women and their young children who have nowhere to turn.
“I was made aware of a house that takes in pregnant, abused, and homeless women,” says Granger. “It’s more than a halfway house in that it provides pre- and post-natal care, job training, etc. to these women. My own mother was that woman years ago…I wouldn’t even be here had she not found a house like this one.”
Finding a Higher Purpose in Los Angeles
There are many reasons behind GDC that are close to Granger’s heart. “I come from a big, mixed family with very loving parents,” he says. “I grew up in Los Angeles in the ‘80s and ‘90s and saw an opportunity to create an authentic, powerful message formed to reinforce the inherent value of women. GDC came out of what I saw around me; I wanted to create something that was not derogatory. If I had a daughter, I wouldn’t want her thinking negative thoughts about herself.”
“My wife is also a huge inspiration for this,” he continues. “She is one of the most stunning women I know, both physically and spiritually. I once asked her what some of the issues are that she struggles with. I couldn’t believe it when she said she often looks in the mirror and hears the words ‘I’m not pretty enough’. She is absolutely beautiful!”

And so are the clothes. Although it’s still early days – the company formed in December 2008 – and selection is still limited to women’s tees and tanks, GDC is experiencing a successful first year. Rich, metallic colours and a shapely style combine for a stunning look. “Women across all segments have really enjoyed it and are finding the tops very satisfying,” says Granger. “There are so many opportunities for growth; right now it’s about making wise choices.”
It’s not all work and no play for Granger. “It’s been a lot of fun, figuring out the nuts and bolts, finding artists to create the designs,” he enthuses. “It’s something I’m passionate about.”
Passionate, not preachy. Caleb Granger is not about selling religion or spirituality, just a simple message. “God’s Daughter. Who is? You are. Welcome to the family.”
