Everyone loves to look as if their look was just thrown together and somehow turned out amazing. Some succeed more than others, but the Olsens get it right every time.

Layer Tank Tops and Basic T-Shirts

The first rule to getting their effortless style is to layer basics. Mary-Kate and Ashley developed their own line called The Row because they were in search of that perfect t-shirt. No need to invest in their $300 t-shirt; discount stores like Forever 21 and H&M now carry basic Ts and tanks for very low prices—try $3 low prices – that can achieve the same look.

The Olsens have been seen wearing slouchy racer-back tanks under fur vests or a denim jackets: simple enough. Or you can take a plain white button-down shirt and add a pop of color with a yellow spaghetti strap tank and destroyed denim cigarette pants.

Look Natural and Find the Right Sizes

The second rule to this look is to never look overdone or uncomfortable. So if sky-high heels are your cup of tea, make sure you can strut with ease. Find a size that doesn't pinch your feet and use insoles to provide extra cushion to the ball of your foot. If you like a skin-tight skinny jean, opt for one with Lycra or spandex that will allow you to breathe easily or try going one size up in unforgiving styles. The Olsens adore both these items and never look awkward in them.

Layer Vintage Jewelry

The third rule is to never be afraid to pile on the layers of jewelry. But remember we’re channeling the Olsens, not Kimora Lee Simmons, so save the bling for another day. The twins prefer vintage (or vintage inspired) jewelry, most often in silvers or metals with worn leather straps and ties. A good mix of high and low will help to achieve this look; think grandpa’s Rolex with layers of friendship bracelets.

In the September 2009 issue of Marie Claire magazine, Ashley Olsen was quoted saying “You’re either born with a sense of style or you’re not. Either you care or you don’t”. The point here is to most definitely care, but to not look as if you just walked out of a department store. It’s a game of mix and match, hot and cold – a perfect combination of structured and ragged.

The Olsens love their designer duds, and are often photographed in them, but never looking like any other celebrities. Their look is fearless and experimental. And although they are identical twins, their style is collectively individual.

While affectionately mimicking Mary-Kate and Ashley’s cool style, remember to stay true to your personal style, never be afraid to take risks, and mix and match pieces to achieve something uniquely you.
