Five Essential Items For a Spring Wardrobe

A Handful of Classic Pieces to Take You from Winter to Spring

Apr 22, 2009 Anna Vognsen

Spring is the time to strut your stuff after being bundled up all winter! Use these five classic pieces as building blocks for a stylish wardrobe.

Trends come and go, and we're usually just as excited to see something fade out as we are to see it first walk down the runway (shoulder pads anyone?). As the years go by, some pieces never go out of style, and are therefore an essential part of any stylish woman's wardrobe. We've identified the classic items for Spring, so you can spend your time looking chic rather than trying to navigate the difference between fabulous and fashion victim.

Day to Evening Dress

A well-fitted, brightly colored solid or patterned dress can be your go-to item all season long. The key to this dress being a wardrobe essential is all in the fit. Make sure it flatters your best assets and hits at or just below the knee for maximum wearability. The ideal dress is in a cotton with sheen or silk blend so that it can look dressy with the right accessories, but is easy enough to clean so you can feel comfortable wearing it to a lazy Sunday brunch.

The Trench

Perhaps one of the most timeless fashion statements is the trench. Nothing says classic quite like this springtime staple, and can be thrown on over practically anything to up the style quotient of your outfit. The easiest option is in a neutral tone such as khaki, black, or white, however if you're daring you can opt for an eye-popping color like orange or pink. Be mindful of your skin tone and think about the colors you gravitate towards. You'll never wear it if it clashes with your favorite skirt.

Statement Jewelry

When all you want to put on are your favorite jeans and t-shirt, a piece of statement jewelry can take your look from blah to casual elegance. A chunky metallic cuff can wake up even the oldest sundress, and a brightly colored necklace can take your old button down out of the office and to a happy hour cocktail party.

Floaty Printed Blouse

If you live and work in a metropolitan area, chances are you're only able to dream about being surrounded by brightly colored flowers and restful greenery. Bring a bit of rural beauty into your wardrobe with a printed blouse in a sheer, chiffony fabric. Make sure the print matches your size, as a small print on a big frame will only make you look bigger. Keep the rest of your look streamlined and bask in the glory of the season.

Dark Jeans

Very few items are as easy to take from casual to dressy than a pair of dark jeans. Flats and a cute top get you dressed in a flash for errands or casual Friday, while strappy heels and an embellished top are perfect for a date. Stick to a uniform dark wash with a straight leg to get the most versatility for your money.

Spring is the season for showing off your style and best assets in the wake of chunky layers and evenings spent indoors. Feel free to experiment with the current trends, but rest assured that you can reach for one of these trusted five items and always look well dressed.
