Fashion Vs Sport Exhibition 2008 in LondonFashion Events at the Victoria & Albert Museum
The Fashion Vs Sports exhibition at the V&A examines how, over the years, sportswear has influenced fashion, both in the high street and on designer runways.
A new fashion exhibition opens on Tuesday 5 August, 2008 at the Victoria & Albert Museum (V&A) in London, which celebrates the relationship of sportswear within fashion; revealing the complexities and tensions between the two industries. Today sportswear has become an essential part of our modern wardrobe, with up-and-coming trends for Fall 2008 featuring luxe sportswear for day and eveningwear, in delicate fabrics and strong structured shapes. An ever increasing number of high-fashion designers are incorporating sportswear influences into their clothing lines (e.g. Marc Jacobs) or have instigated their own sportswear brands, like Stella McCartney. Fashion Vs Sport at the Victoria & Albert MuseumThe V&A’s Fashion Vs Sport exhibition showcases 60 outfits and features design drawings, photographs and movies of how athletic details have influenced high-fashion; becoming a major influence in outfits of today. It features labels such as Sonia Rykiel and Dries Van Norton. According to Elle.com’s Style Report, entitled "Good Sport," there is also a fascinating section dedicated collectors, with photographs of their obsession, from wardrobe of limited-edition tracksuits to hundreds of sought after sports shoes, proving that for some, shopping is not only a hobby but a sport! Special Fashion & Sport EventsWithin the duration of the exhibition there are also many special events. On Saturday and Sunday 9-10 August 2008, visitors can get a chance to pick up a branded T-shirt and cut it into shreds! Watch it being rolled into yarn to be transformed into Noki’s designer collection for September 2008. On Friday 17 October 2008, Fashion and Body Image is examined by author and psychoanalyst Susie Orbach, who, together with stylists, fashion journalists and academics, will talk about the role of body image within fashion and sport. Visitor InformationThe Fashion Vs Sport Exhibition runs for 5 months, from 5 August 2008 to 5 January 2009. Opening times are 10 to 17.30 daily, with late-night opening until 21.30 on Fridays. Further details are available on the museum's micro-website. Fashion Collections at the Victoria & Albert MuseumThe V&A museum also has other collections of interest which are fashion based. These include a large selection of fashion, jewelry, shoes gloves and handbags dating back from the 17th century to the runways of today. According to the V&A’s website, “the museum concentrates on emphasizing progressive and influential designs from the major fashion centers of Europe.” There is also a Corsets and Crinoline collection which is dedicated to the secret history of the corset, and its social and sexual significance. International Fashion Designers at the V&AFrom time to time the V & A hosts a series of live runway events featuring great international designers of this century. In the past the museum has opened its doors to Vivienne Westwood (2004), Missioni (2003), Jean Paul Gaultier (2003), Alexander McQueen (2001) and Christian Lacroix (2006). In May 2008, in keeping with the Chinese theme of this year’s Olympic Games, one of the most prolific Chinese fashion designers, Ma Ke, had her collection featured at the museum.
