- Gray is the new black ... still. But don't forget about black. Everyone looks good in this color, which hides flaws.
- Styles are retro, but not from any one particular decade. Mix '50s-cut skirt with a shirt from the '30s and accessories from the '20s.
- Short-sleeved cropped jackets are hot. Wear them to dress up jeans or as part of a suit to work.
- Trapeze, swing and A-line shirts and jackets show movement and are fresh and fun.
- Suits in houndstooth, herringbone, and tweed fabrics provide interest beyond mere cut and color of the outfit.
- Menswear-inspired pieces that are cut to fit a woman's body are flattering and a powerful statement.
- Poof skirts: You hated them when Angela was wearing them and making them on Project Runway, but now they are mainstream.
- Wrap anything. Find a wrap that works for you, whether it be on a shirt, dress, or coat.
- Dress in layers. It may have once been a marketing ploy to get people to buy more than one piece of clothes, but it also extends the life of your clothes into different occasions and seasons. The truth is, layering clothing is simply versatile.
- Belted clothing. Belts went the way of feathered hair back in the '80s, but now the belts are back. Find them on jackets and dresses. A belted tunic is a trendy look and don't forget about a trench coat.
- Covered legs are also back. No more bare legs in skirts. And right in time for cooler weather too. Warm up with nylons, tights, or even leg warmers, if you dare. Colored and pattern hosiery is in.
- Coats with flashes of color of shiny details are popular. Think big metal buttons, wide belts, and shearling swaths.
Must-Have Accessories for Fall
- Shoes that get noticed are all over. Find colorful shoes, playful patterns, and animal prints in many stores.
- Patent-leather shoes have a shiny retro look but have a mod-glamor look for today.
- Ankle boots, also called booties, are the season's It shoes.
- High-heeled Oxfords are manly yet sexy and perfect for spicing up your office look.
- Layer your jewelry, just as you layer your clothing.
- Cocktail rings that scream for attention are fun to wear and give a little sparkle during the long day at the keyboard.
- Large handbags are everywhere. And they seem even larger with shiny, look-at-me fabrics to draw the eye. Find metallic hues or patent leather in all price ranges.
- Clutch purses are perfect for the woman who needs to grab it and go.
Tips for Men for Fall
- Mix patterns. Wear a suit with stripes with a shirt with checks and a tie with polka dots. Wear an argyle sweater with a striped shirt. To keep from looking too scattered, pick one color to run throughout all pieces.
- Dress in layers also. A button-down shirt with a sweater vest and a corduroy jacket is a great look for a man of any age.
- Think college professor. Find a jacket with elbow patches to give you a look that is both sophisticated yet rugged at the same time.
- Banish those pointy-toed shoes that made you feel like an elf anyway. Go back to a more sensible square-toed shoe. Your toes will thank you for it.
