What's hot in fashion will trickle down more slowly from glossy fashion mags to the average consumer in this tight economy. Here are what looks to love and what to skip.

For those who are looking to add pieces to their wardrobe this year, choose wisely. Adding critical pieces and not getting sucked into "of the moment" fashion will help your options have a longer life. Some trends, such as clothing in hues of khaki and beige, will last you a long time because you will be able to layer them with other pieces. Other trends are impractical, destined to be short-lived, and not worth the money.

The Fashion Trends for 2009 to Get on Board With

  • Menswear - Menswear isn't entirely new this year, but it is more feminine than before, with a more shapely cut to jackets and trousers. The menswear trend is an easy one to pick up on buy simply buying a blazer, which is very hot right now, and pairing it with a crisp white button down shirt. It is also practical in colder weather.
  • Khaki/Beige Colors - This is another trend that is easy to incorporate into your wardrobe and worth the money spent on a piece or two, but it has to be done right. The problem with these colors is that if they are too matchy-matchy, the wearer looks nude from a distance. Try the color of sand in a summer skirt or a top that is khaki with gold flecks. Or choose an assortment of tan hues in a striped mini dress. Also try pairing the khaki colors with bone white or olive green. The Lacoste line has many chic khaki-colored clothes for this season.
  • Stripes or Polka Dots or Plaids - Polka dots are big, literally. The bigger the polka dot, the less "granny" the look. Stripes are also hot again, as witnessed by the red and black Michael Kors dress appearing in all the fashion mags and on the celebs. The stripes should be thick and make a statement. The same goes for plaid. Look at Liz Claiborne's line for examples. The plaid is so large it looks like a picnic table cloth print blown up on the copier to 300 times the size. These three looks would be easy to incorporate into your wardrobe for a relatively small expense.
  • Snakeskin Accessories - Yet another hot trend that is easy to incorporate. This one can be done with shoes, a belt, a hand bag, or gloves. Choosing a faux snakeskin with a vibrant color is one way to get the most pop for the dollar. And if you want to incorporate another hot look, buy snakeskin sandals that are strappy. Two fashion trends rolled into one.

The Fashion Trends of 2009 to Pass On

  • Jumpsuit - The jumpsuit is like a onesie for adults. It comes in both short and pant styles connected to button-down tops or slouchy short-sleeve shirts. If you really want to choose a one-piece outfit that is monochromatic, go with a dress. At the very least it is much easier to use the bathroom than having to pull down an entire jumpsuit in the ladies' stall.
  • Leotards - If you haven't seen this look yet, you're lucky. Some models and musicians are prancing around runways and stages as if they have forgotten to put on pants. Stella McCartney, DKNY, and other designers are all bringing out more one-piece catastrophes like the jumpsuit, only this time they look like someone got lost on the way gymnastics.
  • Ultra-high Waisted Pants - Where the ultra low-rise was bad for anyone hoping to keep their "coin-slot" covered, the ultra-high waisted pants are bad for anyone with a large chest who doesn't want to look like they need their pants to keep their breasts up. While these pants will certainly give the illusion of long legs, it does so in a comical way.
  • Sleepwear for Daytime - This one can almost make the "Do" list, however it is likely that most people will do it wrong. It's not an excuse to wear your sheep-decorated flannels to the grocery store. And neither should you wear your man's silk pajama bottoms out either, despite how some advertisements appear. If you feel you absolutely must try this look, that go small, with a silk pajama-style top under one of the blazers that are so hot right now.

When shopping for new pieces this year, look for items that will have longevity, and try to incorporate more than one fashion trend in a purchase to save yourself money in this tight economy.
