Scarves are a fashion DO. They flatter and suit every body shape and size, every height and weight, every outfit. Time to tie on Fall 2009's most popular accessory.
Scarves are everywhere, and not just because it’s fall. Celebs wear them in all weather and the trend has caught on. When any other neck accessory is in short supply or just doesn’t look right, it’s time to bring out the scarves and see what gels with your outfit. Whether you’re wearing jeans or a suit, going business or casual, t-shirt or wool coat, scarves work.
Even if you think you’ve got the scarf trend nailed down, read on – there may be a few ideas below that even the most adept scarf experts haven’t tried yet.
The scarf as a neck wrap. Rather than the once-around scarf look or the haphazard knot, you can practically swaddle your neck in scarf-ness. Wrap and tuck until you can barely see the ends of the scarf. You don’t have to squeeze your neck with the material, it can still be loosely gathered. But ridding your ensemble of the scarf tails gives you an ideal opportunity to add a fun long necklace to your outfit of choice.
The scarf as a braid. Grab three scarves of relatively equal length – the thinner the material the better – and plait them into one long braid. You can knot both ends once you’ve finished braiding or choose to let them hang loose. Drape your new triple-pattern scarf over your shoulders or wind it once loosely around your neck and allow the ends to fall down. For fantastic flair, select three super-bold shades or mix-and-match patterns. For something intricate but subtle, choose three scarves in the same color palette.
The scarf as a necklace. Take a square silk scarf or a long cotton scarf and fold it into a triangle shape. Then roll the scarf into a thick tube and knot it at the end or at several places along the tube. Loop it around your neck once for a multi-dimensional scarf-as-necklace statement. Or, if the tube you’ve created is long enough, loop it around your neck twice. You can even do this trick with two scarves, or just one, and wear them together. Play with the technique until it suits your personal style aesthetic.
The scarf as an afterthought. Grab a shorter-length scarf and let it drape on either side of your neck. It says, “I know the scarf is trendy, but I didn’t have time to wrap it.” Or rather, “I don’t care that I didn’t wrap my scarf. I’m making my own trend.” For an unforgettable dramatic technique, go out wearing the longest scarf you can find, if you dare.
The scarf as… a scarf. It’s fall! Thrown on a scarf, wrap it around your neck, knot it in three places, tuck it into your coat. Bundle up and enjoy the biggest benefit of the hottest and easiest accessory of the season – warmth! Really, no matter how you swaddle yourself in a scarf, there is no getting it wrong.
Head to the mall and start trying on some styles to find the best colors, textures, and materials for your fall wardrobe.
