Styles constantly revolve and recycle, but these fashion style trends will always remain as long as different personalities and subcultures exist.

Hit the streets or magazine racks and it’s apparent that fashion style trends runs the gamut from alternative rock, urban hip-hop, to funky and classic. The following looks are helpful references to pinpoint different fashion genres and to mimic a desired style.

Classic

A classic style expresses a clean, prim and proper look. For women, earrings are muted and don’t carry a bold statement. Men are well groomed, and jeans and a sports blazer make a regular ensemble.

  • Brands: J.Crew, Gap, Banana Republic, Coach, Dolce & Gabbana, Calvin Klein, Michael Kors, London Fog
  • Celebrities: Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, Mathew McConaughey

Preppy

Conservative, elite, big estates and golf might come to mind, but the preppy fashion style has slightly evolved into trendy status. Staples still remain collared button-ups, polo shirts, khakis, argyle prints and a clean-cut appearance.

  • Brands: Tommy Hilfiger, Louis Vuitton, Ralph Lauren, LRG, DKNY
  • Celebrities: Blake Lively, Kanye West, Prince Harry

Bohemian / Hippie

The boho fashion style trend can represent many flavors and can lean toward the beachy, quirky, eclectic or kitschy cool classification. This style radiates freedom with loose tunics, tousled hair, headbands, fedoras, and other fun accessories including cocktail rings and stacked bangles.

  • Brands: Elizabeth & James, Free People, Silence & Noise
  • Celebrities: Johnny Depp, Kate Hudson, Ashley Olsen, Drew Barrymore

Rock / Funk

A funky rock look is edgy with bold accents that can be expressed with hairstyle and hair color, lipstick or accessories. Clothing pieces include black leather jackets and dark shirts with funky designs.

  • Brand: L.A.M.B., Ed Hardy, Diesel, ByCorpus
  • Celebrities: Gwen Stefani, Pink, Rihanna, Bono

Skater / Alternative

The skater or alternative style also has different ranges including the extreme emo style characterized by tight skinny jeans, long frontal hair and dark eye makeup (guys included).

  • Brands: Hurley, Volcom, Fox, Vurt, Billabong, Quicksilver
  • Celebrities: Avril Lavigne, Pete Wentz, Ashley Simpson

Goth Glam

The goth glam fashion category is a classy version of gothic but ensembles still retain dark and gloomy colors like black, navy and burgundy.

  • Brands: Alexander McQueen, Roberto Cavalli
  • Celebrities: Cher, Madonna, Kristen Stewart

Girly Glam

Girly glam outfits hug the body more tightly and are replete with pink, loud and sparkly accessories, high stilettos and platforms.

  • Brands: Blumarine, Gucci, Be&D, Badgley Mischka
  • Celebrities: Jessica Simpson, Kim Kardashian, Eva Longoria, Victoria Beckham

Urban Hip-Hop

In the street scene, gold chains, diamond earrings and baseball caps have always been standard for men. Urban clothes for women include many brown and tan outfits, bold designs, along with large hoop earrings, thick platforms and tight up-dos.

  • Brand: Marc Ecko, Sean John, Nike, Triple 5 Soul, Mecca, Fubu
  • Celebrities: Fergie, Mariah Carey, Lil Mama, Jay-Z, Eminem

Many people mix fashion style trends depending on mood. The important thing is to find styles that fit personal preferences and characteristics because dress code subconsciously affects a person’s demeanor and strut.
