Can you pull off the harem pant? This Fall 2009 fashion trend is a tricky one - follow these dos and don'ts to see if the look can work for you.

How can harem pants, a.k.a. M.C. Hammer pants, coexist in a fashion world with skinny jeans and thigh-high boots? Well, believe it or not, the baggy, boxy pant is back with a vengeance. But it’s a scary trend. Accentuate your thighs? Add extra material to your bottom? Dabble in the danger zone between a diaper-looking tush and Aladdin comparisons? It can create panic in the dressing room.

These dos and don’ts will give you the heads-up on how you can (or can’t) make this all-the-rage harem pant work in your wardrobe.

  • DO streamline your look. Electing to go with all one color from head to toe, heels to hat, is a wise choice. But you can get snappy with some short-chained, multi-hued necklaces (draw eyes up) or a fab purse.
  • DON’T wear an oversized shirt. If you’re going to go baggy with your bottoms, you have to tighten up the rest of your ensemble. Opt for a slim-fitting shirt and tuck it in to define your waist. Elaborate belts are a great option for adornment as well.
  • DO go super-high on heels. Skyscraper heels are an absolute must. They will lengthen your look so that the harem pants have no shot at making you look wider than you should.
  • DON’T accentuate the tapered leg. The majority of the M.C. Hammer pant styles are tightly tapered at the bottom, even stretching several inches up the calves. You may think this design calls for knee-high boots, but beware – Shakespearean-era pantaloons are only one step away if you attempt this look.
  • DO create a silhouette. It’s important to show off what your mama gave you, so if you’re using harem pants to cover up your pear shape and problem areas, you must emphasize your body goodies. Ladies with fabulous shoulders, don’t be afraid to bare them.
  • DON’T over-accessorize. It can be tempting to go crazy with the chains and bangles in order to compensate for the girth of the harem pant, but these billowy bottoms are a statement in and of themselves. You’ll just look overdone if you get too sparkly and spangly, so accessorize smartly but sparingly.
  • DO acknowledge the miles of material. The majority of women save the droopy crotch look for the comfort of their saggiest sweats on evenings alone at home. If that’s where you feel most at ease in extra fabric, then leave it there. No need to jump onto a trend just because it’s available. Plenty of other folks will take a chance with M.C. Hammer pants. Sit back and enjoy the view.
