Sometimes the hottest trends on the runway can be a disaster in real life. A few simple rules will keep even the most outrageous fashion trends in check.

Every couple of months designers flood the international runways, and the fashion world watches to assess the collections and dissect the trends of the season.

The Fall 2009 collections are no different, and style watchers everywhere have started working the trends into their wardrobe. But buyer beware – not every trend from the Fall runways transition to real-life wear. Keep a few tips in mind to avoid going overboard.

Less is More

The looks you see on the runway are not always meant to be thrown on by the average woman and worn to work. Collections that seem ostentatious are sometimes meant to be, in order to get the designer’s vision across with no room for confusion.

So a general rule to stick to is, when wearing the trends, less is more. This fall leopard prints are everywhere. Models have been photographed struting down the runway in head-to-toe spots. But in real life, it’s just too much. Try wearing just one accent piece in leopard, like a clutch purse, or pair of heels.

Mix and Match

Speaking of head-to-toe, fashion crimes are also committed when an entire outfit is made of pieces all screaming the same trend. For example, 80s fashion is a common theme in the Fall 2009 collections.

To play is safe and stylish, rather than wearing an entire '80s ensemble and look like you’re headed to a Halloween party, mix and match the '80s pieces with sleek and modern ones. Pair a blazer with pronounced shoulder pads over modern skinny jeans.

Walkway not Runway

A trend that has promise of sticking around for the next few seasons is lingerie dressing. Details like corset tops, sheer blouses, and peek-a-boo lace bras dominated the international runways this season.

But before you walk your look off the runway and to, say, the supermarket, keep in mind that the two places are worlds apart. Save the boudoir trend for swanky nightclubs or red carpets. Anywhere else may come off as inappropriate.

Inspiration not Imitation

Unless your circle of friends is young Hollywood or the fashion elite, it’s generally best to use the looks on the runway for inspiration, not blatant imitation.

If the designer’s vision is motorcycle chic, take the feeling of the look as your inspiration. Rather than casing yourself entirely in black leather and studded jewellery, pick up a simple motorcycle jacket and wear it over top off something softer.

Keep these tips in mind to avoid a fashion disaster. With a little creativity and self-restraint, even the most challenging runway trends can transition from the runway into your wardrobe.
