Trendy fashions include new fall colors, slim clothing, long jewelry, and the ever-rising eco-friendly demand.

This fall has seen some very recent changes in style, and some repeats of last year’s fashion introductions. Overall, the trends have taken a turn for the more outspoken style: women are boasting large accessories (huge rings) and displaying explicit revolutionary wording on their clothing (“go green!”), as well as wearing items with a definite feminine touch (wedge heels) and bringing back some old styles (brooches).

Fall/Winter Clothing Trend

  • All-season scarves are a must, no matter the weather. Thick knits are excellent for cold days; lightweight, colorful scarves are fine for every other day.
  • Skinny jeans have made their way into every woman’s closet (or should have by now!) now matter what the body type. Tights and leggings have also carried over from last year, and are generally dark in color and paired with skirts or shorts and boots or flip-flops.
  • Long, fitted tops that land just at the hip bones add to the lean look, and help hide any imperfections about the waist area. Tops are solid colors or simple, bold plaids.
  • Vests have re-entered the scene: slim vests with contours that fall at waist level allow some of that long shirt to show at the bottom, creating a layered, accessorized look. Vests are dark, usually black in color.
  • Long, flowing wraps are more slowly making an appearance, often in the form of a vest or jacket. These wraps look best when paired with skinny jeans or leggings, as these slim pants counter the large flowing effect of the wrap.

Fall Fashion Jewelry

Jewelry this fall tends to be long and large: long necklaces that land well below the bust, long earrings that hang straight down almost to the neckline, large rings, watches with big faces, and cuff bracelets are all the rage. Good jewelry advice is to choose either large earrings or a large necklace, but not both as this tends to make the wearer look too gaudy and over-displayed. If the wearer loves a certain large necklace, she should complement the piece with very simple stud earrings of a matching or complementary color. The same advice goes for rings and bracelets on the same hand: choose to wear one bold piece, and complement with another simpler piece.

Whereas silver-colored jewelry was the way to go in previous years, gold jewelry is now more sought-after due to its warm tones and natural look (an increasingly desirable trait that has risen with environmental awareness). Also, a new gunmetal-colored jewelry trend has made an entrance. Look for these less common pieces in fashion-trendy stores.

Brooches, once a thing of the past, have been reinvented in beautiful and unique ways. Not only are they worn on a lapel, but can be strategically placed in hair for an evening look, or on a handbag to create a new design.

Trendy Women’s Shoes for Autumn

To sum up fall’s fashionable shoes: boots and wedge heels. Knee-high boots, boots with laces, boots with no heel, boots with a wedge heel, boots with a stiletto heel, boots with fleece lining, leather boots, suede boots; if it’s a boot, it’s in. For a shoe to wear to work, choose a work-appropriate shoe with a wedge heel.

2009 Fall Colors

Fall fashion colors this year are purple, black, and smoky grey. Block colors and bold plaids are very stylish. Choose a couple garments per outfit in each color to be on-trend this season.

The Environmentally-Friendly Trend

Eco-minded individuals have had their voices heard in a massive uproar. Fashion trends reflect this cry for environmental sustainability, and have responded with lots of organic cotton fabrics and other renewable resources. Many brands want to display that they are an environmentally friendly business, and produce green products with explicit lettering reading “Green Is the New Black” and other such mantras. New jewelry trends involve pieces that resemble wood, stones, leaves, and other “natural” things.

This year’s fall has seen many new trends and reinvestments in old styles. It will be interesting to see which new items are here to stay and which will leave with the passing of the season!
