This season designers have flocked to leather as a material of choice, and the options are endless for shoppers who want to adopt the luxe fashion trend themselves.

Whether you’re looking to add an investment piece into your wardrobe or stay thrifty while keeping up with the trends, whether you prefer the faux variety or are looking for the real deal, there is a leather accessory out there with your name on it.

The Leather Jacket

A well-tailored leather jacket will always be in fashion. And if the jacket is high quality, it will just get better looking with age. So, how to decide what jacket to get this season? Hands down, the leather jacket of the moment is the motorcycle jacket, in classic black leather.

The biker jacket is so popular right now it is available at pretty much every price point. Stores like H&M, Zara, and Topshop carry affordable versions of the style. Montreal’s Rudsak tailors the biker jacket to perfection. And if you are willing to spend the big bucks on a butter-soft bomber jacket, the sky is the limit. Look for inspiration on the fall runways, particularly at Balmain and Phi.

Think Outside of the Bag

For an unexpected look, wear leather that breaks the mould of the boots, handbag, and belt combo. The leather handbag is ubiquitous in women’s fashion, but there are so many other options when shopping for leather items this season. Designers embraced the trend wholeheartedly by presenting pencil skirts, tailored dresses, and legging pants in genuine and faux leather.

A black leather pencil skirt will take you from the office to the nightclub with a simple change of shoes. For a work-appropriate look pair it with a cream, tie-front blouse and classic round-toe pumps. To take your look into the nighttime, trade your pumps for sky-high gladiator sandals or ankle length booties.

Paper or Plastic

Faux leather has come a long way in the last few years, so it’s easy to balance your fashion ideals with your ethics. PVC-based pleather is not the only faux leather on the market. There is vegan leather, cork leather, leatherette, and the list goes on. Even the older version of pleather, recognizable by its varnished appearance and stiff texture, has been replaced by a more realistic patent leather material.

Trends in Leather

If you want to not only be on trend this season, but also step it up a notch by adopting the trends within the trend, look no further. Keep an eye out for leather clothing in unexpected colours like mushroom and scarlet. Another trend that is sticking around this season is perforated leather. Look for boots and handbags with an airy and sport-inspired surface.

Whether you are looking to add a biker-inspired toughness to your wardrobe, or add rich texture and sophistication your office apparel, leather is the go-to material for fall and winter fashion.
