Eco friendly underwear has now branched out to such great lengths that French label g=9.8 has launched a new sustainable yet stylish lingerie collection, made from wood.

The Mya collection by g=9.8 is as sexy and soft as you’ll find in any upmarket lingerie department. However, their boy shorts are a long way from lacey French knickers, as they are made from wood chips, instead of lace. Despite this, there is no danger of suffering from splinters as the fibers extracted from the tree branches are spun until they are as soft as silk.

The g=9.8 Mya Lingerie Collection

For eco-friendly underwear these matching bra and boxer sets are trendy, stylish and sexy. They are available in fashionable colors and the boxers/boy shorts have feminine pleat detailing on the sides. The bikini bras are padded but contain no underwire, and the collection is antibacterial and biodegradable.

The g=9.8 label takes its name from the scientific figure for the earth’s acceleration due to gravity.

The Concept

The concept came about when French fashion designer, Sophie Young’s daughter suffered an allergic reaction which was partly triggered by chemical products, dyes and pesticides. Young developed the range for g=9.8 as a line of lingerie respectful of the environment.

The Process

The entire production is based in France. The small French village, with a population of around 1500, maintains the livelihoods of residents by preserving local know-how and creating local employment.

The workers cultivate the wood and break it down, using enzymes. The wood then takes on a dough-like format, whereby fibers can be extracted. The fibers are later spun using a process that is similar to cotton. Using non-toxic dyes, the underwear is then colored blue or red. To help the garments keep their shape, a small amount of lycra is added.

According to the manufacturers, g=9.8, the products “have amazing properties, as the fiber regulates temperature, ensuring that the wearing is never too hot or too cold.” In the Daily Mail’s article “ A barking idea?,” of 4 March 2008, it states that the fibers' dozens of microscopic holes mean that air can circulate more hygienically, and also absorb twice as much humidity, thus preventing the growth of bacteria.

The wood fiber made from the white pine tree clippings is trademarked as Lenpur®. It has the coolness of linen, the softness of silk and the touch of cashmere.

Where to Buy

The Mya Collection of bikini bras and boy shorts/boxers is available online through the British retailer, Bynature.co.uk. Mya products are shipped in a cute clutch made of recycled materials or purchased fair trade. Price wise, these are higher-end designer at £39.95 (around $80) for the bra and £26.95 for the boy shorts.

The French label also has a range of eco-friendly sleepwear and sportswear, which it showcased in Paris at the annual Ethical Fashion Show®. This year's show is taking place between 9-12 October 2008.
