Like it or not, bikini season is here. Images of sleek, long legs, belly buttons, and svelte shoulders are always the rage but not every woman is able to dress the part.

The pressure to show skin during hot summer months is enough to bring on hives for even the thinnest of women and some simply throw in the towel. Others aren't quite ready to shed too much fabric for the sake of fitting in. They just want to look thinner.

Jean Minks, a fashion, jewelry and Mary Kay consultant, says it is possible to accomplish that goal without compromising comfort and confidence. Under the tutelage of Gayle Foster and In her work, she often hears of the struggles women face in trying to shed extra pounds. She offers encouragement in helping women dress to look thinner from head to toe.

10 Ways to Dress to Look 10 Pounds Thinner

  1. Minks says to start with a monochromatic base. In other words, choose one color from shoulder to hem to create a more horizontal silhouette.
  2. One mistake women make in buying new clothes is not checking their measurements for changes. Clothes that don't quite fit (too large or too small) can add weight to your frame. Always select the right size, not the size you want to be.
  3. Wear darker colors to camouflage areas you want to hide."No one wants to wear black, brown or navy during the summer months," noted Minks. "But they really do minimize areas of the body where you're least confident."
  4. If you absolutely must wear light/bright colors, wear them near the face to draw the eye up and away from the rest of the body.
  5. To avoid looking heavy, stay away from layers. Minks says she often sees women who want to dress the way models appear in magazines. They often wear layers that work well for their height and body type. Not all women meet those standards, no matter how nice of a look it creates.
  6. "Accessories can help," added Minks. "Wearing large earrings is another terrific way to draw the eye up and away from problem spots."
  7. Shoulder pads were popular in the '80's but they're still a powerful tool in helping to look thinner. They add height, square up shoulders, and balance out hips.
  8. Add a jacket and keep it open. Often times, women don't consider a jacket during the summer months but Minks says to bear in mind air conditioned buildings. A nice jacket is perfect for creating more vertical lines and for keeping bare arms warm.
  9. Make sure sleeves are properly shortened so as to avoid causing a distraction to the hip line; an area most women don't want added attention.
  10. Another way to add length and height to your appearance is to wear matching hose with your hemline or shoes (or both).

Back to accessories, Minks concluded, "Wear long necklaces. This will generate a slenderizing look!"

Minks says the key is to consider the time of year when dressing to look 10 pounds thinner.

"All 10 of these ideas won't fit for every season," she said. "But look carefully in your closet to see if there's some way you can incorporate the time of year with your wardrobe."

You might not be able to match wits with a bikini, but you can feel more confident and secure in dressing to look thinner.
