Here are some tips to follow if you find navigating the waters of fashion tricky.
Fashion trends come and go constantly; and while some women always manage look fabulous, sadly, despite their efforts, others end up looking like fashion train wrecks. With this in mind, here are here are a few rules of style so that you can avoid becoming a victim of fashion.
- Squeezing every possible trend into one outfit won’t make you look fashion savvy; it will just make you look confused, which is why its a good idea to keep your outfit to a one or two trend minimum. Trying a trendy belt with a dress in the newest color of the season looks super chic, but belaboring the look with animal print and chunky accessories will drive you off a fashion cliff, so remember to keep it simple.
- Buying something just because it’s out in stores, whether it looks good on you or not, is another sure way to become a fashion victim. In the June 2009 issue of Glamour Magazine, designer Giorgio Armani suggests all women should say to themselves “I know what I like, and if fashion proposes something that’s not me, forget it”. So, with this in mind, trust yourself!
- Purchase, wear, discard at end of season, repeat. Buying on the cheap is a good way to try a hot, yet fleeting trend without spending a lot of money. Stores like Forever 21 are great; they're inexpensive, and chock full of current looks. Just remember to purge your closet at the end of the season; while you can get a fun new fad for a steal, still, you get quantity, not quality, so don’t expect it to last beyond a season; remember, clothes with dingleberries are never en vogue
- Don’t go for a look just because you see a celebrity sporting it; celebs tend to get away with a lot more than the average person; a far out look that looks amazing on your favorite celeb might translate into kooky when you put it on; so make sure when you buy an outfit, that it’s your look, not someone else’s; you can still get the essence of their look (via a great accessory or hair style) without looking like an impersonator.
- Lastly, while this one has less to do with being a fashion victim and more to do with a lack of style, it is important nonetheless; avoid mom jeans! These unflattering, often stone washed, always outdated jeans with their twelve inch rise and zipper to match, ones that turn every gal's sillouhette into the shape of an ice cream cone, really do say "I'm not a woman anymore, I'm a Mom". Correction: you are a woman; a woman with far too many choices in denim to be wearing (let alone owning) such an awful pair of (dare we even call them) pants.
