Coats come into their own this winter. Check out this season's classics and uber-modern styling with bold colors, sculpted silhouettes, traditional and inventive shapes.

Every woman’s wardrobe should include a few essential pieces. These include a classic everyday coat, a jacket and a versatile trench or casual coat. If you are lucky it may also include a statement piece, which is up-to-the-minute.

In their online women's fashion magazine of October 1st, high-end online retailer Net-A-Porter ran a feature on this season’s best coats. The article entitled “Coat Check”. In it they broke this season’s favorites into categories rather than trends. All coats featured are currently available for view on their website. Similar looks are now hitting commercial high-street stores with a vengeance.

The Investment Coat

A statement coat is one that will see you through the ups-and-downs of everyday and endure decades. Its best to avoid this season’s the more sculpted looks. Go for luxury tailoring in classic hues of black, navy, camel or one of the winter neutrals of soft gray, oyster or cream. The style can be modern but not too over-the-top. Strike a balance between modern and boring. Such examples are Fendi’s white collarless coat and camel-colored double-breasted number by Marc by Marc Jacobs.

The Statement Coat

As statement coat is the outwear indulgence of the year, in bold colors or on-trend styling. This season’s fashion fix, that once you put on, transforms your outfit to an up-to-the minute look. This could be one of this season’s embellished numbers, with military piping, jewels at the collar, or trimmed with shaggy Mongolian fur.

Alternatively make it plaid or tweed (Ralph Lauren or Missoni) or graphic prints. For something less colorful with this season’s chic black and white prints.

Coats also come in a kaleidoscope of brilliant colors. From the fuchsia pink of Miu Miu’s double-breasted princess coat to the buttercup yellow of the See by Chloé mod coat, to Sonia Rykiel’s purples and reds. Aquascutum’s Tara double-breasted coat in fuchsia will give a jolt or color to any black dress.

Designer runways this season were all about volume, huge, sculpted collars and necklines, wide shoulders and full skirts, what is known as the architectural trend. Experiment with this season’s new silhouettes, architectural-collared coats, wide sleeves and origami folds, like Rick Owen’s look-at-me origami wool coat. For something a little more subtle then there’s Moschino’s Cheap and Chic double-collar coat, with its exaggerated rather than extreme collar.

For the latest yeti-look in shaggy fur Chloé 's crystal embellished Mongolian Shearling coat, a mere snip at £8,435, is to-die-for!

The Off-Duty Coat

The off-duty coat can be one of this season’s trendy quilted puffa jackets or soft leather jackets, cape style sleeves, or wool duffle coats to be worn with jeans or give attitude to day dresses. Miu Miu’s cropped puffa jacket is perfect for keeping you as warm as toast at the weekends whilst Mulberry’s hot coral pink duffle coat will really get you noticed. This bright duffle is styling at its best with superb detailing, with large patch pockets a floral lining.

The On-Duty Coat

The on-duty coat is as sharp as it is stylish, it can be military, trench, or classic belted twill coat.If you avoid braiding and frogging and keep to a less embellished traditional style like Chloé's cavalry twill coat or MCQ’s wool admiral’s coat a military-inspired coat should transcend seasons. Check out Stella McCartney’s felt military coat for chic classic styling.

Think trench coat, think Burberry. Choose from a classic or modern styling including an up-to-the minute tiered trench coat by Burberry Prorsum, which also offers a stone white single breasted trench with a pleated skirt section. Go retro with a Burberry Deanham nylon yellow trench or more the more classic masculine-like Manston.
