Coat Styles for Fall Winter 2009From Camel Cashmere to Hero Jackets and Chubbies to Capes
A classic camel coat is Fall 2009's most sensible investment. For an on-trend piece go for a hero jacket with overstated shoulders or a fashionable cape.
This fall winter sees glamorous coats in rich fabrics such as cashmere, velvet and brocade, and jackets in faux fur or butter soft leather. Embrace the fabulous ‘40s with an eel-thin belted coat or dance the night away in a colorful ‘80s disco diva sequined jacket. Coat styles have never been more varied and jackets also get a modern makeover with the new season's shapes. The Classic CoatIf you buy one coat this winter then make it camel. Even better, make it cashmere. According to Elle magazine’s "Runway Edit for Autumn Winter 2009," (August 2009) classic discreet luxury is the calling card with perfectly cut pieces which never go out of style. Whether its double-breasted, belted, loose or figure-hugging, strike a balance between practical and desirable by investing in Fall 2009’s most versatile and timeless wardrobe staple, an understated classic camel coat. For something a little more dramatic then tweed (in salt and pepper gray) and graphic houndstooth check are perennial fashion favorites. This country classic coats are reworked into fall’s new dramatic shapes with bold shoulders and necklines in short and below-the-knee lengths. The Hero JacketSharp shoulders are the order of the day in this season’s hero jacket, inspired by Balmain. A statement piece which represents the ultimate in power dressing with sculpted shoulders and hard edges or soft sweeping curves. The great thing about these hero jackets is that they can give the illusion of a tiny waist and they also build in some curves. The Biker JacketBiker jackets are as popular as ever but have become less rock ‘n roll and more grown up. This season, find billowy styles in butter soft leather with gently shaped sleeves. The Biker is reworked to be soft and flirtatious with satin drapes and ruffled hems. Inspired by the runways of Prada, leather is about being smart and chic this fall. Layer a biker jacket over a flirty dress for a feminine twist. The Boyfriend BlazerThis oversized and easy piece is to be worn over delicate dresses for a very up-to-the-minute look. This long-line jacket hides the hips and accentuates the shoulders. Wear one with skinny jeans and patent brogues, or a silk and lace lingerie-style dress for a man/woman mix. Part of this season’s ‘80s revisited trend is a disco diva sequined boyfriend jacket. Unleash an inner Kylie Minogue with this nightclub nostalgia. The CapeA funky cropped cape is a fashionable alternative to a hero jacket. It can also hide a mulitude of figure flaws. Capes appear in all fabrics this season from satin to leather to wool. Find accentuated rounded shoulders with a distinct military feel and oversized blanket capes in camel and tweed felted wool. Even the ubiquitous trench coat has been reworked with an added capelet. The ChubbyDubbed “The Chubby”, these short yeti-like furry jackets inspired by the ‘70s are once more having a fashion moment. Shaggy and relaxed, wear them over light wispy dresses or skirts to balance the look. Find Chubbies in a kaleidoscope of colors along with winter white, black and gunmetal gray. Team them with thigh-high boots for some sexy glamour but be brave and go bare legged, another look of the season. Whether it's channeling an inner wild child with a shaggy Chubby, inner rock goddess with a biker jacket or sophisticated Dior lady in a camel cashmere coat, there are plenty of options for investing in a winter wardrobe staple. If finances are tight , go for smart investments like a classic camel or a statement jacket, or simply rework a favorite coat with a narrow belt instead.
